Anyone But You Made The Right Choice To Erase Bea & Ben’s Original Romance Ending Twist

Anyone But You Made The Right Choice To Erase Bea & Ben’s Original Romance Ending Twist

Anyone but You omitted Ben and Bea’s original twist ending, though the omission could potentially fuel the storyline for a film sequel. Anyone but You is loosely based on Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing and references aspects of the Shakespearean comedy’s themes and characters to invent a modern retelling of Ben and Bea’s hot and cold love story. In Much Ado About Nothing, Benedick and Beatrice, a single soldier and an unmarried woman who bicker and insult each other mercilessly, are tricked into confessing their obvious feelings for one another by friends and family members.

Anyone but You translates the Shakespearean story with Glen Powell’s Ben and Sydney Sweeney’s Bea, who detest each other but are pushed toward reconciliation by the rest of Anyone but You’s characters. While Benedick and Beatrice’s love story develops in a bustling Sicilian city, Ben and Bea’s unfolds in Australia, where Bea’s sister, Halle, prepares to marry Ben’s friend Claudia. Anyone but You diverts from the play in further ways, such as changing character names, adding supporting parts, and even altering Ben and Bea’s happy ending, doing so with clever intention while leaving more of their story to be told.

Ben & Bea Get Married In The Shakespeare Play That Inspired Anyone But You

Much Ado About Nothing Ends In A Double Wedding

Halle and Claudia about to kiss on their wedding day in Anyone but You

Similarly to many Shakespeare comedies, Much Ado About Nothing involves a complex interwoven plotline and several somewhat farcical events. Benedick and Beatrice’s romance develops at the same time as a fellow soldier named Claudio and Beatrice’s cousin Hero fall in love. By the conclusion of Much Ado About Nothing, Claudio and Hero get married, similarly to their Anyone but You character counterparts, Claudia and Halle, yet the nuptials occur in a shocking double wedding that they share with Benedick and Beatrice.

Anyone but You’s ending does not include a marriage between Ben and Bea, and for several glaring reasons, the omission happened for the better. What works for a Shakespearean play may not test well with modern film audiences, and if Anyone but You married Ben and Bea after they fought for most of the movie, it’d come across as far-fetched and shocking for viewers. Not to mention, if Ben and Bea married Shakespearean-style, it would mean they’d have to hijack Claudia and Halle’s wedding day, which would also come across as completely outlandish for audience members.

Ben & Bea’s Shakespeare Ending Is Still Good News For Anyone But You 2’s Story

Ben & Bea’s Future Could Be The Basis Of An Anyone But You Sequel

Ultimately, Ben and Bea could still have a shot at fulfilling the happily ever after the characters that they are based on received. Anyone but You 2 could work by centering on Ben and Bea’s marriage around or as a storyline. Shakespeare’s fans and proponents of their torrid romance would appreciate Ben and Bea finally sealing the deal with a movie focused on them taking the next step in their relationship.

No reports have confirmed what would be a well-needed and greatly appreciated Anyone but You sequel, but there is a decent chance it could happen. Besides Anyone but You being a box office hit that could draw in crowds again, actress Sydney Sweeney has since addressed the chances of an Anyone but You sequel. A sequel has yet to be set in stone, but Sweeney’s tease that she and Powell have been considering further opportunities together gives hope to Ben and Bea getting hitched at some time in Anyone but You‘s future.
