Captain America: Civil War is still going strong at the worldwide box office, but it appears there’s no rest in the world of Marvel, especially where solo movies are concerned, with a host of projects in development, from Spider-Man: Homecoming to Black Panther. With Civil War now officially the biggest movie of the year, after overtaking fellow Disney flick Zootopia, its total stands at am impressive $982 million, in a film that focuses on the Avengers fighting amongst themselves. Whether you’re Team Captain America (Chris Evans) or Team Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), there’s plenty of other aspects within it to get excited, such as the introduction of both Black Panther and Spider-Man, as well as the second appearance of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man.
Not only is the current Marvel outing capturing the imaginations of audiences over the world, the solo movies planned are also getting people excited too – notably the Black Panther solo film starring Chadwick Boseman is sending some corners into a frenzy, largely down to the cast it is building with the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Michael B. Jordan.
Yet with another enticing announcement – that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is closer than ever to getting her own film – Anthony Mackie (the actor who plays Cap’s high-flying buddy Falcon) has spoken of his enthusiasm for the movie and how he can be involved. Talking to HitFlix, Mackie speculated over what a Black Widow movie could be about:
“If they made a Black Widow movie, it would be more of a spy espionage-type movie, which would be great, to see a female James Bond or something like that.”
With Johansson’s character not having any superhero ‘powers’ per se, a Bond-type movie could be a mouthwatering prospect, especially with how well Marvel’s writers have solidly built up the character over a number of films. Yet Mackie is also keen for Falcon to play a key role, seeing as the pair have already featured in number of big screen outings together. “Well, I think Black Widow needs a little bit of aerial support!” he joked. But it’s true that his addition would make for an interesting dynamic, similar to the way he’s contributed effectively to the Captain America movies.
Mackie added:
“I would love, in any capacity, to be a part of that. I’ve always been a huge fan of Scarlett’s, and I’ve always, since I met her, just really admired her as a person. So in whatever capacity I would be used — Falcon would fly for Black Widow.”
Mackie’s enthusiasm is certain to be noted by Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, who ultimately pulls all the strings and has himself committed to doing the film. He too had some hugely positive things to say about a Black Widow solo movie; expressing a desire to see Johansson’s Russian spy lead her ownstory, simply due to the fact that she deserves it: “She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.”
It’s difficult to argue against the idea of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding to include a Black Widow film. Not only is she one of the more interesting, humanistic characters – she has an eventful past that’s barely been touched upon in the MCU and has rich connections with Cap, Bruce Banner and Hawkeye – but also because Johansson’s character is doing a lot in a male-dominated superhero world and indeed film industry. It’d fit nicely into her personal filmography too, having already played human-turned-superhuman-turned-AI-turned-demigod in the box office hit Lucy, too.
