As Anthony Mackie is getting ready for Captain America 4, the Marvel Cinematic Universe star reveals a fun detail about his character prep. Phase 4 has and is continuing to come with multiple changes to the MCU, following the thrilling conclusion of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga. Some long-time heroes have departed while making room for new ones to come to life from the comics. However, it has also allowed for other established characters to step more into the spotlight as various Avengers have departed. One of them ended up being Sam Wilson, as Steve Rogers passed on the mantle—or in this case, shield—to Falcon, following the war against Thanos.
When Marvel Studios began producing original series on Disney+, Sam was one of the veteran MCU heroes to headline his own show, alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier followed the duo as they saw the Captain America title fall into the wrong hands. This eventually led to Sam embracing Steve’s final wish as he became the MCU’s new and proper Captain America. It didn’t take long until it was revealed that Mackie is set to star in Captain America 4, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier writers Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson penning the script.
While Marvel Studios has been staying very silent about Captain America 4 since the news broke, Mackie is definitely getting ready for his solo project. In a new interview with Variety, during the 2022 Grammy Awards, the MCU actor talked about how he has various songs that he uses when doing character prep for any role. When asked about what song represents his role in Captain America 4, Mackie brought up a Tupac song but couldn’t talk too much about it on camera due to its explicit lyrics.
I can’t say it on camera, but it’s a Tupac song. And it starts off, ‘First off, dot dot dot dot dot dot … ‘
Despite the major hype around Sam becoming Captain America, it’s interesting how little has emerged so far about his solo film. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished its run in late April 2021, which was followed directly by the report of Captain America 4 being in the works. It’s currently unclear when Mackie will be seen again in the MCU before his film comes out. One ongoing theory, however, is that Sam will be seen at least once later this year in one of Phase 4’s most anticipated films, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, due to Mackie’s recent, intriguing comments.
Given how packed Phase 4 already is, it wouldn’t be a shock at this point if Captain America 4 gets saved for Phase 5. Marvel Studios already has a number of in-development projects that have yet to get release dates or even start shooting. However, at least Mackie’s new comment about the film suggests he’s already preparing for it. After playing a supporting role in so many MCU projects, it makes sense the actor is enthusiastic about his upcoming headlining performance. As 2022 progresses forward, Marvel Studios will hopefully give audiences a better idea of what to expect from Captain America 4.
