Anson Mount Is Proud Star Trek: Strange New Worlds “Can Be A Lot Of Different Things”

Anson Mount is proud of the versatility and boundary-pushing of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Mount stars as Captain Christopher Pike on Strange New Worlds, a role that began in Star Trek: Discovery season 2. However, unlike the serialized Discovery, Strange New Worlds returned to Star Trek’s classic episodic format and then went where no Star Trek show had gone before with acclaimed high-concept episodes like a comedic crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek’s first-ever musical.

At Toronto Comic Con, Anson Mount joined his fellow Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast members Ethan Peck and Christina Chong for a panel. Mount extolled the virtues of Strange New Worlds‘ episodic format, which he feels makes it easier for new viewers to watch Star Trek without having to catch up on 58 years of canon. We’re blessed with two showrunners who have two incredibly large sets of brass cojones and believe Star Trek is established enough as an institution that it can be a lot of different things. It has become strong enough that it is malleable to an extent that maybe we’ve never realized before. We do want to be the show that’s pushing that way.

Mount compared the serialized style of Star Trek: Discovery to how Strange New Worlds is better able to present “big ideas” with its episodic format:

Star Trek needs to have room for the big idea of the week to be the star. When you’re working in a serialized fashion, and there’s nothing wrong with that, I think Discovery wanted to do that and did very well with it, but if you want to have these big idea episodes, you have to clear the palate every week in order to have room for that. Another thing I think the writers have done really well is balance that with having longer arcs.
