“Another Unnecessary Event”: Red Hood’s New Era Begins by Calling Out DC (In Perfect Jason Todd Spirit)

Red Hood‘s newest era is starting off by calling out DC Comics’ huge event problem. Given the preponderance of major events in DC Comics, it seems like Gotham City suffers a city-destroying event every other month. Even Gotham citizens are tired of it, as one news reporter calls out DC’s Joker War as having been wildly unnecessary.

DC has recently promised to move Red Hood out of Batman’s shadow and give him his own area in Gotham City to watch over. This new beginning for Jason Todd can be seen in the upcoming Red Hood: The Hill #0 by Shawn Martinbrough, Tony Akins, Stefano Gaudiano, Paul Mounts, and Troy Peteri. A preview for the issue features news reporter Denise Harlowe calling out DC over its reliance on major events, referring to the recent Joker War as “another unnecessary event.”

Considering just how often Gotham City gets taken over, it’s not surprising that even the news reporters are commenting on how unnecessary it seems. Addressing the issue so bluntly fits perfectly into the tone of a Red Hood comic.

Gotham Never Gets a Break From City-Wide Destruction

Red Hood the Hill

The amount of chaos and massive crime that Gotham has seen over the years has slowly been getting more and more absurd. While Gotham City undeniably has a major supervillain problem, this wasn’t always as obvious as it has been in recent years. One of the biggest events in Gotham’s history was the 1999 comic arc No Man’s Land, which saw almost the complete destruction of the city. Now it seems something equally destructive tends to happen to Gotham every few weeks. Any calm between these chaotic events is short-lived. “As our city proves time and time again, nothing lasts forever,” Harlowe says in the preview for Red Hood: The Hill #0.

During Tom King’s run on Batman, his story culminated in the 2019-2020 City of Bane story arc. This storyline saw Bane gain complete control over Gotham City, exiling every vigilante from the city and allowing the villains to run rampant. It was a major event and involved the death of Alfred Pennyworth and a confrontation between Batman and Flashpoint’s Thomas Wayne. The significance of this event was somewhat undercut when, only several months later, Joker War broke out. That event involved Joker stealing Batman’s wealth and launching a full-scale attack on Gotham City. The city hadn’t even been rebuilt from Bane yet.

Major events used to be something special that would change the status quo in new and exciting ways. But over the years, it seems that DC has begun to rely on major events as filler more than anything else. City of Bane nearly destroyed Gotham City and was quickly followed up with Joker War, which was even more destructive. A lot of the time, it seems things happen to Gotham City for the sake of something happening, such as the events of Gotham War, which also changed very little. Perhaps with Red Hood getting a fresh start in a new area of the city, Gotham can also get a break from its constant city-shattering wars and events.
