Another DC Shared Universe Is Ending In 2024 After 7 Movies

The DCEU is ending soon, but it isn’t the only DC cinematic universe nearing its end. The DCEU started with Man of Steel in 2013, but has been inconsistent throughout its run. Now, Peter Safran and James Gunn are rebooting the cinematic universe as the DCU after the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Outside the DCU, the studio still has several other ongoing projects, including the Robert Pattinson Batman movie series and its animated films and television shows.

DC has a massive catalog of animated movies that feature many of their greatest characters. There is a current ongoing connected series of animated movies known as the Tomorrowverse, which has delivered films such as Green Lantern: Beware My Power and Batman: The Long Halloween. Unfortunately, it was recently announced that this universe will also be coming to an end in 2024 with a climactic crossover event.

Justice League Crisis On Infinite Earths Will End DC’s Tomorrowverse

The Tomorrowverse started in 2020 with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and debuted its most recent film, Justice League: Warworld, in July. The animated universe has six total movies and is a successor to the DC Animated Movie Universe, which ended in 2020 with Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. The next film in the Tomorrowverse will be Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, but it will be the final film in this animated saga. According to a press release from Warner Bros., the upcoming crossover event will be the concluding chapter and it will be a three-part trilogy.

The filmmakers reveal in detail their intricate plan to create a comprehensive animated universe across seven films, concluding with the events of the three-part adaptation Justice League Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The first part of Crisis on Infinite Earths will release on January 24, 2024, but the other release dates haven’t been confirmed yet. This announcement means that the Tomorrowverse will be significantly shorter than the DCAMU, as it will only have seven movies within four years, while the former had 16 movies in seven years. It’s unclear why the Tomorrowverse is ending after such a short run, but it might be because Gunn is making the animated projects more essential to the DCU.

Will The New DCU Kill WB’s Animated DC Movies?

Gunn and Safran’s plans for the DCU do not include killing the animated DC movies. However, the quantity of animated movies may decline as Gunn plans to tie many of the animated projects into the main timeline of the DCU. The DCU begins with an animated series called Creature Commandos, a seven-episode series on Max featuring the vocal talents of Alan Tudyk, Viola Davis, and David Harbour. Davis’ appearance as Amanda Waller connects Creature Commandos to the live-action DC universe, since she’s reprising the role from both Suicide Squad movies and will star in her own solo show, titled Waller.

That said, the Harley Quinn series recently got renewed for season 5, so there are still animated projects that will exist outside the main DCU timeline. There are also the “Elseworlds” projects, which exist outside the DCU, presenting many possibilities for how the animated movies could continue. It’s unfortunate to see the Tomorrowverse have such a short run, but there are plenty of DC movies and shows to look forward to in the future.
