Animal Crossing New Horizons: Fishing Tips & Tricks

Animal Crossing New Horizons brings back fishing. This guide will help players master fishing with helpful tips and tricks. The Animal Crossing series is one that keeps to its roots. With every new entry in the series, only minor changes are made to keep the gameplay feeling fresh. It usually has to do with the role the player takes on. In Animal Crossing New Leaf, the player takes on the role of the mayor of the entire town. They are responsible for making sure the local residents are happy and satisfied with their living conditions. In Animal Crossing New Horizons, the player is on a tropical vacation to a deserted island. Here, they come along with two other villagers and together they work with Tom Nook in creating an island paradise all on their own. This “tropical vacation” quickly turns into the player character running around and completing errands to pay off the debt they collected for taking this trip. This is where the fun of the series comes in. There is always something to do on the island, whether it be customizing the island itself, collecting Bells or Nook miles, or interacting with the neighbors and building strong bonds with them. One feature that has been a staple in the series for years now involves fishing. Fishing is one of the most important and heavy features in the game to complete. This guide will provide helpful tips and tricks for fishing in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Fishing is a key feature of the island experience of Animal Crossing New Horizons. In the early stages of the game, the player is given a DIY recipe to create a Fishing Rod. This Fishing Rod will prompt a small minigame where the player has to catch a fish. These fish can be used in a variety of different ways. This small minigame plays a vital role in helping to develop the economy of the island, create new locations to explore, and is another objective for the player to complete (while also being one of the most difficult). This guide will help players get started with fishing through tips and tricks and take a deeper dive into what fishing can accomplish in the game.

How To Fish in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Before fishing, the player must first create a fishing rod. The fishing rod can be created at either Tom Nooks crafting bench or the player’s very own crafting bench once they unlock it. To develop the Flimsy fishing rod, the player must have at least 5 tree branches. These are pretty easy to come by. If the player is struggling to find some, go around and shake some trees. Now that the player has a fishing rod, approach the nearby river or ocean. A shadow should appear in the water. Be careful not to move too quickly, or else this will scare the fish away. Make sure to cast out the line as close to the fish as possible. The player will notice if the fish notices the line since the fish will begin to approach it. Wait until the lure sinks into the water and press the A button to pull the fish out of the water. The fish might attempt to trick the player by gently touching the lure. For the best accuracy, wait until the controller vibrates violently to pull the fish in. The biggest fish are harder to come by and more challenging to capture.

Better Fishing Rods in Animal Crossing New Horizons

The flimsy fishing rod is great for beginners, but after a few attempts, the rod itself will break and the player will have to make another one. To get a stronger fishing rod, save up on some Nook Miles and head into the Resident Service tent. Speak with the machine in the corner and spend some Nook Miles. There will be an item for sale for 3000 Nook Miles that provides the player with a wide variety of DIY recipes for better tools, including the Fishing rod. Once purchased, the Fishing Rod can be created using these two items.

  • 1 Flimsy Fishing Rod
  • 1 Iron Nugget

The Flimsy fishing rod can be made using normal tools and the Iron Nugget can be found by smashing rocks using an ax. This is the better version of the rod and won’t break nearly as easily.

Fish For Critterpedia in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Every time the player captures a new type of fish, the game will document what type in the Critterpedia app on the Nook Phone. There are dozens of different types of fish for the player to collect and this is one of the most difficult guides to finish in the game. The player can also head to the Museum and speak with Blathers about adding it to his collection. With enough fish, the museum will display all different types of the players fish catches. Lastly, fish can also be sold at the Resident Service tent for some extra Bells if the player is running slow.

Fishing is one of the biggest objectives in Animal Crossing New Horizons. The game expects the players to play all year round, especially when the game itself runs on real-world time. Some fish may only appear during the day, while some other exclusive deep-sea creatures may only appear on a specific month of the year. Each fish comes with its own version of a Pokedex description, where each entry describes a bit of background about each creature, when they’re available, and where they were captured. Completely capturing each fish in the game will take players years to complete. Although for those true hardcore fans, they can skip back and forth in time using the Nintendo Switch’s settings to change the time of year. It might not be the most ideal set up, but this makes it much easier to complete the Critterpedia. Animal Crossing New Horizons plans to maintain the attention of its players for a very long time and fishing is a key way how.

Animal Crossing New Horizons is available now on the Nintendo Switch.
