Andrew Herr & Dylan Playfair Interview: Letterkenny Season 10

Grab yourself a Puppers and pull up a chair with Letterkenny back on Hulu. Season 10 picks up from the cliffhanger finale of the past season as Tannis, Reilly and Jonesy have their latest hockey championship taken away due to Shoresy’s shenanigans and must find a way to reclaim their glory elsewhere.

Following the show’s return, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with stars Andrew Herr and Dylan Playfair to discuss Letterkenny season 10, the awkward hilarity of pandemic production, the struggles of flexing their butts on camera and Reilly and Jonesy’s futures.

Screen Rant: Letterkenny season 10 is interesting in that not only does it cross the season 10 milestone for a show, but it was also a combined production with season 11. I’ll start with Andrew and then Dylan, what was that like for you guys getting that larger production for the show in comparison to the past?

Andrew Herr: I think because there was such a long break, I think everyone was stoked that we were going to spend an extra length of time together. Like this was early pandemic, everyone had kind of been cooped up in their places and hadn’t really been able to see each other as much as we normally have. I think everyone was just excited to get back and see each other and have laughs. Filming during COVID had its obvious obstacles, they constantly had to tell us like, “Hey, six feet, six feet,” because over the course of the day, we just get closer and closer, they have to split us up again. [Laughs] But I mean, Jared and Jacob once again hit it out of the park with what they wrote and I think everyone was just really excited to see each other, because it’s been almost a year since we’ve seen each other and we were on tour when COVID first happened.

Dylan Playfair: Yeah, I second that. We’ve been sort of chasing this carrot on the end of a stick for quite some time and, like Herrsy said, we were in the middle of a fantastic fun tour and COVID struck and we were waiting for a long time. So to be told that we were getting an extended chunk of time together was really nice, we all missed each other. We’re not just coworkers, but we’re friends and we like to spend time together, we like to hang out. Herrsy articulated it perfectly, it was weird, it was different, it was COVID. But it was still something that we were really looking forward to and yeah, we got to make a lot of a lot of funny episodes of television, and I think the fans are gonna love season 11 too.

So since you mentioned a lot of funny episodes, the VidVok episode, which I’m sure everybody’s already talking to you about, is one of the the more interesting for you guys as characters, I’ll put it that way. I talked to Evan and Tyler and they said they had some input on what they did for their VidVoks, so did you guys have any input for what exactly you guys did for your VidVoks in the episode?

Dylan Playfair: That’s from Jared Keeso’s brain, man, all that stuff. We got a heads up that we’re gonna have to independently flex butt cheeks and Herr’s got a funny story about that.

Andrew Herr: Yeah, Jared texts us like maybe a month out saying that we were going to be flexing our butts on TV. Once I got over the shock of that, I started trying doing it at home and like my left cheek just wouldn’t work. So like my left cheek wouldn’t work, I could only flex my right, so I had to like for 15 minutes every day leading up to that series just work on flexing my left cheek so that I could actually do it on TV. I still got it, I’m doing it right now, I still got it. [Laughs] But no, a lot of that was Jared’s idea, Dylan and I obviously put our own personal spin on it, there’s certain moments that we came up with on the fly, but that was mostly Jared’s idea. But it was a ton of fun.

Dylan Playfair: I can say the rollerblades were us and the blading was something that we had a little bit of artistic liberty with. But every season is hilarious, there’s something in there that makes you laugh out loud when you’re reading the script by yourself. So to see it come to life and do so well and to be one of those episodes that people are really enjoying is an honor for me and my butt, I’m sure Herrsy feels the same way. [Laughs]

That’s awesome. So interestingly, too, this season sort of explores you guys both trying to find a future path after the the ship was taken from you in the end of season 9. What’s that been like for you guys watching your character arcs following that cliffhanger?

Dylan Playfair: Yeah, I mean, you say it beautifully, we were the leaders of the pack in seasons 1 and 2, we were playing junior hockey, we’re winning games. Then to quote Angie, we’ve kind of been in freefall ever since and to have it taken away from us again, it’s hilarious, it’s really really funny and conflicts drive story. So to see these guys feeling like they’re back on top and to be put back on the bottom is the best.

Andrew Herr: It was also refreshing, because we had so many seasons where it’s very hockey oriented, which is always a lot of fun, but it was refreshing to see them try and do something outside of that to retain their previous glory. I am excited to see what Jared comes up with next, because maybe perhaps there’s a chance that — if you’re not making it to the NHL, or if you eventually go pro and then you have to retire. I think a lot of hockey players, a lot of athletes in general, go through that loss period when they can no longer play the sport they love. There’d be a lot of funny things to explore for Reilly and Jonesy, perhaps make us even more lost than we already are. [Laughs]

Dylan Playfair: At least we have each other. [Laughs]

Andrew Herr: We have each other, that’s all that matters.
