Andrew Garfield Endorses Tom Holland For Oscars 2022 Host Gig

Andrew Garfield has officially endorsed fellow Spider-Man actor Tom Holland to host the 2022 Oscars. After three years without one, the Oscars will once again have a host for its upcoming ceremony in March. Previous Oscars hosts have included the likes of Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, Ellen DeGeneres, Hugh Jackman, Jimmy Kimmel, Neil Patrick Harris, and many more.

In an interview last month, Holland expressed interest in hosting the Oscars, and, according to a recent report, the Academy has now actually reached out to the actor to discuss that possibility. With the likes of Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, and Pete Davidson also reportedly in the running as hosts, it’s not clear what Holland’s chances are, but the move comes during a crucial year for the Academy Awards. For the last several years, the show has experienced declining viewership and increasingly negative reviews from critics and many are calling for a drastic revamp to get the awards show back on track. Interestingly, the news regarding Holland’s bid to host the Oscars come amidst a large campaign by Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios to get Spider-Man: No Way Home recognized by the Academy.

In a new interview with People, Andrew Garfield, who appeared alongside Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home, endorsed his co-star for the hosting gig. Garfield calls Holland “charismatic” and a “song-and-dance triple-threat actor,” qualities that, according to Garfield, would make his younger co-star an “incredible Oscars host.” Check out Garfield’s full comment below:

“I think Tom is so charismatic and such an incredible performer and actor, and I think he’d be an incredible Oscars host. I think he would be absolutely brilliant. And I would certainly be curious to see how he was as an Oscars host. He’s so charming and he’s such a showman and he’s such a song-and-dance triple-threat actor. I would be very, very confident in his confidence.”

As a “song-and-dance triple-threat actor” himself, Garfield, who recently had his showmanship talent on display in Tick, Tick…Boom!, certainly seems like a good judge of who would make a strong Oscars host. The charming chemistry between Garfield, Holland, and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home has actually led to some fans calling for the three Spider-Man actors to host the Oscars together. Garfield’s endorsement of Holland for hosting duties at the Oscars comes amidst a massive wave of fan support for Garfield himself, with many calling for the actor to get a third movie in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

As the star of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has been a massive global phenomenon, and with his upcoming role in the Uncharted movie, Holland is one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, so it won’t be completely surprising if he does end up getting the gig. With declining audience numbers and increasingly negative critical reception, the Oscars are in need of a shake-up, and bringing in a young movie star like Tom Holland (who would likely bring with him scores of new viewers) might be just what the ceremony needs. The 2022 Academy Awards are scheduled to take place this spring on March 27.
