The adorable little crewmates of Among Us are always seen wearing full spacesuits, even indoors. These serve the obvious gameplay purpose of letting Impostors blend in with their colorful peers, but the in-universe reason for Among Us‘ crewmate costumes is less clear.
Despite being extremely light on story, Among Us contains quite a few clues fans have pieced together into a fairly cohesive picture of its lore. One particularly compelling theory, for instance, uses Among Us‘ maps as a timeline for how the Impostor attacks started. The theory suggests crewmates traveled on their ship, The Skeld, from MIRA HQ to Polus. There, they encountered the alien Impostors, and the dangerous creatures followed them aboard the ship and back to their home planet.
This theory explains the Impostors’ origins, but relatively little is known about Among Us‘ crewmates. It’s even unclear whether crewmates are human or alien, in no small part because of their body-obscuring suits. Either way, investigating the possible purpose of those suits themselves can give fans some insight into crewmates’ daily lives.
Do Among Us’ Crewmates Wear Spacesuits Or Hazmat Suits?
While playing on all three maps, Impostors are able to sabotage crewmates’ oxygen supplies in a central location. This implies that, rather than a limited, self-contained oxygen tank, crewmates’ suits somehow get their O2 from their surroundings. Perhaps their backpacks absorb enough oxygen to sustain them for a short time without the central supply, explaining why they’re able to venture outside the facility on Polus. But if that’s the case, couldn’t they just put them on only when they need to leave the safety of the oxygen-rich indoors? It appears Among Us‘ crewmates actually wear them at all times, according to the picture in their wallets (viewable during the Swipe Card task), so why can’t they ever take them off?
One theory, from Apex Legends YouTuber KEVTHEKING99-YT, suggests the crewmates are trying to avoid some sort of disease. KEVTHEKING99-YT argues crewmates may have started to wear spacesuits or hazmat suits to protect themselves, then, as it became the norm to wear them at all times, they colored them in a variety of shades to help identify each other. It’s unknown what this disease could be, but it could be the parasite that turns crewmates into Impostors (if that’s what Among Us‘ Impostors are, at least).
A more likely explanation may be a simple, practical one. Since Among Us‘ crewmates are actively under attack from Impostors and know they’ll often be voting others out the airlocks, they may just want to constantly keep their suits on in order to avoid being exposed to Polus’ alien atmosphere, The Skeld’s vacuum of space, or MIRA HQ’s apparently toxic air (judging by the planet’s heavy cloud of smog, when viewed through Polus’ telescope). This still wouldn’t explain the wallet photo, however, as it’s unlikely crewmates were taking family pictures while being hunted. With the threat of Impostors, exposure, and suffocation at the hands of just a few stray leaves in the O2 filters, maybe crewmates’ lives are simply so full of danger that they’ve never had a choice but to stay safely in their spacesuits, even in their own homes.
