Amazon has confirmed Reacher Season 2 just days after the new action-drama series debuted on the Prime Video streaming service. The platform has had several successful original dramas, including their similar adaptation of Jack Ryan. Prime Video varies its release strategies between weekly releases and full-series binges. Reacher, which debuted in February, premiered as an entire season on the platform and is already a massive hit for the company.
Reacher is based on the popular series of novels from writer Lee Child, previously adapted into two movies starring Tom Cruise. While the films flew relatively under the radar, Amazon’s new series based on the books seems to be doing much better with audiences. The show follows a former military police officer arrested for a murder he didn’t commit. Jack Reacher, played by Titans’ Alan Ritchson, is then thrown into the center of a vast conspiracy involving dirty cops, businessmen, and politicians. The thriller series is one of Amazon’s top five most successful debuts on streaming.
Now, THR reports that Reacher will return for a second season. The speedy renewal further proves the successful reception of the show by audiences within its first week on Prime Video. Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke praises showrunner Nick Santora’s “original approach to the storytelling” and star Ritchson’s “brilliant embodiment of the character.” Reiterating the Global success of the new program, Salke says she “can’t wait to bring fans a second season of their new favorite show.”
Reacher has been well received by audiences since its debut days ago. Original author Child has praised the show and its star for being more accurate to his novel than Cruise’s portrayal. As is customary for authors and creators, Child also has a small cameo in the show. Leading man Ritchson has spoken about his experience becoming an iconic action hero, comparing the show to his time playing Aquaman on Smallville. Before the Reacher’s Season 2 renewal, Ritchson revealed that the showrunners plan to adapt one novel per season.
With Reacher season one adapting The Killing Floor; the first of Child’s series of Jack Reacher novels- there are plenty more stories to be told in future seasons. Reacher could quickly become a long-running and vital IP for Prime Video. Fans will be eager to see more of the must-see thriller show, but they’ll have to wait a while before season 2 hits screens.
