God of War is finally getting a live-action adaptation after almost two decades of being stuck in development hell, and though it’s in the early stages, there’s plenty of news. The God of War video game series began in 2005, and follows the titular god, Kratos, who was tricked into killing his family by Ares. Kratos attempts to get revenge, but he must first battle through hoards of Olympian gods. The series cleverly mixes Greek and Norse mythology, and the franchise and lore are only getting deeper and more epic in scope with every installment.

Amazon and Sony are developing a live-action God of War show, which will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video. While concrete details are few and far between when it comes to the live-action God of War cast and story, there has at least been news about who isn’t playing Kratos. Producers have also promised that the series will be faithful to the source material too. It will be a long time before a live-action God of War trailer arrives, but with the God of War game director involved, and the budget that Amazon will undoubtedly invest in the God of War series, the show will be worth the wait.

The most recent live-action God of War news debunks a heavily-speculated casting rumor. Ever since the live-action God of War show was announced in 2022, Dwayne Johnson has been talked about as the potential Kratos actor. However, the God of War video game director Cory Barlog set the record straight. Responding to a news story reporting that Amazon is seriously considering Johnson for the role, Barlog bluntly responded, “literally never heard anything about this.” While that doesn’t offer much in way of news, it does clarify things.

The live-action God of War show is confirmed and has been since 2022. The live-action God of War news arrived in May 2022 during Sony Pictures’ investor meeting at the end of its second quarter of the year. During the presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan (via a Resetera user) confirmed the series is in development and will be released on Amazon Prime Video. This comes as a relief following so many failed attempts to adapt the beloved video game series.

There is no news about the live-action God of War cast. However, there are a couple of promising candidates for the God of War. Jason Momoa’s name has been thrown around for the role over the past year, which is ironic given that Johnson and Momoa will co-star in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes. Another possibility is Christopher Judge, who has voiced Kratos in every game. Judge isn’t just a voice actor, as he has starred in action sci-fi shows such as Stargate SG-1, and has plenty of live-action experience.

It’s hard to speculate what the live-action God of War story will be given that the franchise includes eight games, a couple of which are reboots. However, while Amazon Studios’ Head of Television, Vernon Sanders, didn’t give anything away about the live-action God of War story, he did have positive news (via Collider). Sanders confirmed that the series is faithful to the video games, calling the first season, “Incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own.”
