Amazon’s Invincible Confirms Mark Grayson Isn’t The Show’s Most Interesting Character By A Long Shot

Amazon’s Invincible Confirms Mark Grayson Isn’t The Show’s Most Interesting Character By A Long Shot

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 2, episode 3!

Invincible season 2 has just made an interesting move, as the Amazon series has proven that Mark Grayson isn’t the show’s most interesting character by a long shot. Mark Grayson is the main character in Invincible, which has led many to believe that he is the one that deserves the most screentime and development. While Mark is an interesting character, the Invincible world has become populated with other interesting characters throughout its first two seasons. Invincible season 2, episode 3, however, has taken things a step further, showing that Invincible doesn’t actually need the titular superhero in order to be entertaining.

Invincible season 2 is finally here, with the highly-anticipated continuation of Amazon Prime Video’s beloved animated superhero series now releasing on the streaming service. Invincible season 2 is set to be jam-packed full of continued storylines and new ideas, with the series promising to follow up on Invincible’s battle with Omni-Man in Chicago while also introducing new characters like Shapesmith, Bulletproof, and the Invincible season 2 villain Angstrom Levy. All of these new storylines have made Invincible season 2 feel as if it’s jumping around a lot, but this may actually be to the show’s benefit, as some characters are more interesting than Mark Grayson.

Invincible Season 2 Proves Mark Isn’t The Show’s Most Interesting Character

Amazon’s Invincible Confirms Mark Grayson Isn’t The Show’s Most Interesting Character By A Long Shot

Invincible may be named after the superhero alter ego of Mark Grayson, but season 2 has already proven that he isn’t the show’s most interesting character. Invincible season 2, episode 3 makes an interesting move, with it not entirely focusing on Mark Grayson’s story. While the episode does start out exploring Mark Grayson’s time moving to college, the episode swiftly shifts focus to a more intergalactic storyline. Invincible isn’t brought back into episode 3’s limelight until the very end, but that doesn’t make it any less entertaining, with season 2 only proving that Invincible doesn’t have to solely focus on Invincible in order to be fun.

After the brief Mark Grayson story, Invincible season 2, episode 3 jumps to a completely different corner of the universe and focuses on the superhero Allen the Alien. Allen the Alien is an incredibly powerful Unopan that travels the galaxy in search of a warrior capable of battling Viltrumites. Allen had an encounter with Invincible back in season 1, but he hasn’t been heard from since, making the decision to focus on him for nearly an entire episode quite a surprising one. Allen the Alien’s adventures as an agent for the Coalition of Planets is an interesting detour from the main story of Invincible, and it absolutely works.

Viewers care just as much about Allen the Alien in Invincible season 2, episode 3 as they did with Mark Grayson in any other episode. Allen the Alien’s emotional arc and tragic episode 3 ending prove that he is an even more interesting character than Mark Grayson, and it seems that the writers know this. Completely focusing on Allen the Alien in the midst of Invincible season 2’s many other storylines shows that the team behind Invincible is confident enough to give viewers a break and still keep it entertaining. Allen the Alien is one of the show’s most fun characters, with him completely outshining Mark Grayson in episode 3.

Allen Isn’t The Only Invincible Character More Interesting Than Mark

Although Allen the Alien is fun to watch, he isn’t the only Invincible character more interesting than Mark. Atom Eve is a top contender for the title of Invincible‘s most interesting character, with her season 2 arc and own spinoff special proving that she is capable of carrying her own. The various members of the Guardians of the Globe are incredibly interesting, with Monster Girl and Robot’s romance, Rex Splode’s ego, and Black Samson’s mysterious past all making them incredibly fun to watch throughout Invincible season 2, even when it causes the series to sideline Mark Grayson.

Invincible‘s heroes also aren’t the only ones to be more interesting than Mark, as the villains have managed to live up to Invincible’s level of entertainment as well. Invincible season 2, episode 1 almost entirely focused on Angstrom Levy, and although this was his first appearance, it was an incredibly popular debut. Omni-Man is arguably more iconic than his superpowered son, and his twist appearance at the end of episode 3 proves that he still has a lot going on. Exploring what Omni-Man has been up to since he abandoned Earth could be incredibly interesting, with it being more mysterious than whatever Mark has been up to.

Why It’s Okay That Mark Grayson Isn’t The Real Star Of Invincible

Putting a greater focus on Allen the Alien and Invincible‘s other characters has proven that Mark Grayson isn’t the show’s real star, but that’s OK. Although the series is named after him, Invincible is about much more than Mark. Invincible is turning into a series that focuses on an ensemble cast rather than the arc of one specific character. This strategy has worked well in plenty of other shows like Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, and giving specific characters their own episodes could be a strategy that also works in Invincible season 2.

Invincible‘s decision to pull focus away from Mark also works in another big way, as it helps to keep the show fresh. Many moments in the Invincible comics aren’t solely focused on moving the main story forward, causing the series to feel like it’s dragging its feet a little bit. Using the Invincible show to shine a spotlight on other fun characters is a great way to fix the pacing of the series while also fleshing out individuals that weren’t as important in the source material. Invincible season 2 should continue this trick, only focusing on Mark when it is incredibly important.

Even though there are plenty of characters more interesting than Mark Grayson, that doesn’t mean that Invincible isn’t interesting. Mark’s struggles to deal with his father’s betrayal and disappearance are enough to drive the overarching narrative of Invincible season 2, with it serving as a strong emotional backbone to the series. As Invincible finds out more about Angstrom Levy’s plan, his arc will become even more exciting, with it possibly improving his position in the show’s character ranking. Mark Grayson is exactly what Invincible needs to balance the series, but that doesn’t mean he outshines the other characters.
