A television adaptation of Joe Wright’s action-drama Hanna has been in the works for some time, and now it has found its lead cast by bringing Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman together once again. The pair will join Esme Creed-Mills as Hanna in the upcoming Amazon series that follows the CIA’s attempts to wrangle a young girl with extraordinary skills, as she and her father repeatedly evade capture. Enos will play the part of Marissa, the unsanctioned agent doggedly pursuing the two, while Kinnaman will play Erik, Hanna’s ex-military father who has isolated and trained the girl for the past 15 years.
The casting is noteworthy not only because it’s the first casting for the series, which was announced last May, but also because it reunites Enos and Kinnaman, both of whom starred together on AMC’s would-be prestige drama The Killing. The pair worked together on the red herring-obsessed murder mystery for four seasons (three on AMC and one on Netflix), bringing Seattle detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder full circle from embattled investigators to unlikely romantic partners. Since then, the pair have appeared in a number of shows and movies. Kinnaman most recently starred in Netflix’s expensive sci-fi mystery Altered Carbon, while Enos appeared in ABC’s The Catch opposite Peter Krause for two seasons, and has a role in Amazon’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens.

As reported by Variety, Enos and Kinnaman’s characters appear to be the same ones played by Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana in the 2011 feature film. So although Hanna will feature an onscreen reunion between Linden and Holder, the pair will be on opposite sides of the show’s central conflict. Given the expanded format of a long form television program, however, there may be a chance the two will share the screen more often than Blanchett and Bana did.
While adapting a film to a television series comes with some fairly common risks, Hanna the TV series at least hails from David Farr, who co-wrote the film along with Seth Lochhead. Farr has been busy in television as of late, as he also worked on the adaptation of The Night Manager as well as AMC’s upcoming McMafia and Amazon’s Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. If anything, his involvement in the series suggests he’s found an angle from the original film worth exploring in greater detail over a longer span of time.
The series is set to be directed by Sarah Adina Smith, whose credits include two episodes of HBO’s anthology Room 104, the film Buster’s Mal Heart, which stars Rami Malek and is available on Netflix, as well as an upcoming episode of FX Legion season 2. So far, it seems like the series has an enviable cast and interesting creators working behind the scenes. Hopefully we’ll learn more about the Hanna TV series very soon.
