All My Friends Are Dead Zodiac Signs & Ending Explained

All My Friends Are Dead Zodiac Signs & Ending Explained

Netflix’s dark comedy All My Friends Are Dead concludes with a bizarre wedding party as well as several unanswered questions about parallel universes and zodiac signs. Directed by Jan Belcl, the movie follows a group of friends who gather for a New Year’s Eve party. While the champagne flows, the body count rises under peculiar and ironic circumstances. While most of All My Friends Are Dead is fairly straight forward, there are several instances that necessitate an explanation.

All My Friends Are Dead stars several incredibly talented Polish actors that showcase their abilities by coming together to showcase how comedic a horrific New Year’s Eve party can be. In 2020, Netflix offered numerous foreign-language features and, in 2021, they do not intend on slowing down. Within the first two months of the new year, they’ve added Brazil’s Invisible City and Belcl’s Polish feature All My Friends Are Dead. The streaming service will offer new originals every week, including several foreign-language movies and television shows. In January, Netflix teased 27 new movies for 2021, but there’s likely even more new content that audiences can anticipate in the coming year.

According to critics, All My Friends Are Dead has been described as a gory version of the raunchy teen comedy American Pie. It is entirely warranted as there are characters comparable to those in the popular movie franchise, most notably, Stifler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge). While most of All My Friends Are Dead’s contents are comedic, there are some elements that may be underscored as insignificant such as the use of zodiac signs and mentions of parallel universe. Once Daniel (Konrad Zygadlo) and Angelika’s (Katarzyna Chojnacka) wedding takes place at the end, it complicates the movie entirely and makes these seemingly insignificant elements far more important than initially presumed. Without further ado, here’s what actually happened in All My Friends Are Dead.

The Real Meaning Behind The Zodiac Signs

All My Friends Are Dead Zodiac Signs & Ending Explained

Anastazja (Julia Wieniawa-Narkiewicz, Nobody Sleeps In The Woods Tonight) believes in astrology. As such, she guesses nearly every single main character’s zodiac sign. Coincidentally, almost every single one of them is an air sign: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. They are known for being ephemeral, or lasting briefly as they signify transitionary moments in people’s lives. While airs signs are supposed to get along with fellow air signs, this is not the case for the party-goers of All My Friends Are Dead. By utilizing the zodiac signs, Belcl creates a hostile environment where the stereotypes of these signs leads to death. The peculiarity of mixing of these three signs leads to each of them feeding off of each other, causing them to erupt into a blood bath. Ultimately, the zodiac signs are meant to indicate that the party was doomed from the start or, as Anastazja would say, “the stars are totally aligned.”

The Parallel Universe Theory

Anastazja is the first person to bring up the idea of a parallel universe. Once that seed is planted, nearly every party-goer questions what their lives would be like if they hadn’t made a particular mistake during the festivities. Although it doesn’t seem of grave importance — as anyone may question what life could be like in a parallel universe — the ending makes it important. The primary basis of the theory is that no one would’ve died had Anastazja not gone upstairs with Filip (Mateusz Wieclawek) and found the gun, but this is proven false. As she exclaims during the entirety of All My Friends Are Dead, the stars are aligned and have mapped out their fates for them. Meaning, no matter what happens, parallel universe or not, they will always die in this exact way, similar to the rules and exceptions of Final Destination.

Daniel & Angelika’s Wedding Explained

Daniel & Angelika’s wedding takes place shortly after the detectives leave Marek’s (Kamil Piotrowski) house. It appears ethereal as all of the New Year’s Eve party guests show up to their celebration dressed in all white. One may presume that this indicates that they are in heaven and finally living out their most desired fantasies, including Rafal (Michal Sikorski) coming out as gay to his entire group of friends without any negative reactions. If the movie had concluded as the couple was married, it would make the theory that they are in heaven entirely plausible; however, there are some very specific conversations that indicate that the ending of All My Friends Are Dead is a parallel universe instead of a heavenly reunion. Daniel and Angelika’s wedding is used as a means of setting up their particular timeline with their own string of horrific events that are set in motion by Anastazja.

After Jordan (Adam Turczyk) talks to Filip, it is revealed that he quit his hip-hop career to focus on his relationship with Anastazja. In the original timeline, he did not. What’s even stranger is that, during their conversation, Filip doesn’t seem to know Jordan, meaning the two have never met. This solidifies the fact that the ending of All My Friends Are Dead takes place in a parallel universe. As Anastazja rejects Jordan in favor of hooking up with the pizza guy, now known for finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, it further insinuates that they are in an entirely different timeline where they may be able to survive the party.

Except, there’s one major symbol that indicates that they will not. As Anastazja pulls the man into the office, the bloody painting from the New Year’s Eve party still hangs in the hallway, but there is no bullet hole in the door. Upon entering, she finds the gun all over again and shoots an unknown person as they walk by. This ending symbolizes that there was no way that they could escape their fates and, as Anastazja stated in the original timeline, “the stars are aligned.” Her statement alone is enough to signify that the events of All My Friends Are Dead were predetermined to happen based on their zodiac signs and the exact place as well as time that the party occurred. The horrors of the New Year’s Eve party ended when she broke her neck, but the wedding party massacre began the moment Anastazja found the gun for a second time. The ending of All My Friends Are Dead showcases the inescapable function of fate and destiny by subtly altering character interactions as well as the party’s purpose, all while retaining the importance of the cosmos.
