All 19 Bosch Characters That Returned In Bosch: Legacy

All 19 Bosch Characters That Returned In Bosch: Legacy

Although Bosch: Legacy features a number of new characters, there are plenty who return from Bosch, either as major players or in smaller roles. The cast of Bosch: Legacy is a healthy mix of old and new, with Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers, and Madison Lintz in the spotlight, but they are supported by some less familiar faces. Harry Bosch has left the LAPD, so there aren’t as many of his colleagues, but his work as a private detective allows him to catch up with old friends and foes alike.

Some of the most popular characters from Bosch make cameo appearances in Bosch: Legacy. Even if they aren’t vital for the narrative, these cameos can still be a joy for fans. Bosch: Legacy is a spinoff, but in reality it’s more of the same. The show relies on its new cast to keep things fresh, and develop their own characters and story lines, but it can still look into the show’s past to bring back the same feeling of Bosch. Some characters are so compelling that Bosch: Legacy reintroduces them even if they don’t have a big part to play.

19 Titus Welliver as Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch

All episodes

Bosch: Legacy obviously wouldn’t be possible without Titus Welliver, who acts as executive producer, as well as the star of the show. Bosch retires as a homicide detective at the end of the original show, and Bosch: Legacy sees him start a new chapter of his life as a private investigator. Welliver brings his trademark stoicism to the role, just as beleaguered and grizzled as before. Bosch: Legacy makes some tweaks to the format, but Welliver is a constant, both in presence and performance. With Bosch: Legacy season 3 on the way, Welliver shows no signs of fatigue.

18 Mimi Rogers as Honey “Money” Chandler

All episodes

Harry Bosch’s one-time enemy, Honey “Money” Chandler, plays an even more important role in Bosch: Legacy than she does in Bosch. So far, she has appeared in every episode. After surviving an assassination attempt in season 7 of Bosch, Chandler’s faith in the criminal justice system falters, and she begins to question everything she has been fighting for in her professional life. Bosch and Chandler have endured a rocky relationship, but the former rivals nurture their professional partnership in Bosch: Legacy, and they care for each other on a personal level too.

17 Madison Lintz as Maddie Bosch

All episodes

Harry Bosch’s daughter Maddie grows up throughout the seven seasons of Bosch, from a teenager to a woman who decides to follow in her father’s footsteps and enter a career in law enforcement. Bosch: Legacy charts her journey as she discovers the challenges of being a rookie patrol cop on the streets of Los Angeles, under the tutelage of Reina Vasquez. Season 2 of Bosch: Legacy ends on a cliffhanger, as the fallout from Maddie’s traumatic kidnapping continues. Maddie’s relationship with her father gains a new dimension when she becomes a cop, and his protective instincts take over.

16 Jamie Hector as Jerry Edgar

3 episodes

All 19 Bosch Characters That Returned In Bosch: Legacy

Bosch’s occasional partner, J. Edgar, is a trusted ally. J. Edgar appears in every episode of Bosch in some capacity, but he has only shown up three times so far in Bosch: Legacy. His first appearance is in season 1, episode 6, “Chain of Authenticity,” and although he doesn’t play an important role in the plot, he shares a heartwarming catch-up with Bosch. He returns in season 2, episode 1, “The Lady Vanishes,” as a detective investigating Maddie’s kidnapping. The episode, and the one immediately following it, see him and Bosch working together again like they used to.

15 Scott Klace as John “Mank” Mankiewicz

9 episodes

Mank looking puzzled in Bosch

Mank is a desk sergeant in the LAPD. He used to work with Bosch, but after his retirement he takes it upon himself to look after Maddie as she finds her feet in her new job as a police officer. Mank appears in most episodes of Bosch, but not all, and he has also appeared in nine episodes of Bosch: Legacy so far. He doesn’t often play the most central role in his episodes, but he is a key figure in the Hollywood Division of the LAPD, and the department wouldn’t be quite the same without him.

14 Mark Rolston as Lt. Donald Thorne

5 episodes

A room full of police officers in Bosch

Lt. Donald Thorne is another personality in the Hollywood division of the Los Angeles Police Department. In seasons 4 and 5 of Bosch, he is a combative police officer, and he often clashes with his colleagues. In Bosch: Legacy, he serves as Maddie’s commanding officer, and watches over her as she starts patrolling in Hollywood. He treats her with more care and respect than he afforded some of his colleagues in Bosch, and this could be due to his respect for her father. However, it’s possible that he changed his approach for other reasons.

13 Moronai Kanekoa as Kai Morgan

4 episodes

Maddie talks to two other cops in Bosch: Legacy

Kai Morgan is an officer in the LAPD assigned to patrol in the Hollywood division. In Bosch, he responds to the airport after Harry Bosch resurfaces from his intense undercover operation infiltrating the Dalton Walsh drug organization, and he clears the plane after it lands. He also responds to other dangerous situations, such as the Farmacia Esquevel shooting, along with his partner Talia Shepherd. Officer Morgan only appears in season 5 of Bosch, but he returns in Bosch: Legacy as one of Maddie’s new colleagues.

12 Mark Adair-Rios as DDA Alex Kennedy

1 episode

DDA Alex Kennedy in Bosch

Deputy District Attorney Alex Kennedy appears in nine episodes of Bosch. He is part of the Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) which re-examines old cases when the possibility of a retrial or a release for an incarcerated individual arises. He is the one who informs Bosch in season 5 that the Preston Borders case is being reopened due to new DNA evidence coming to light. In Bosch: Legacy, Alex Kennedy returns for just the first episode of the first season. With Bosch no longer in the LAPD, Alex Kennedy will have fewer reasons to be directly involved.

11 Alan Rosenberg as Dr. William Golliher

3 episodes

Dr. Golliher talking to Bosch

Dr. William Golliher is a forensic anthropologist who works at UCLA, but he’s also on retainer for the medical examiner’s office, and he offers his expertise on certain cases throughout the series. Like most of the characters in Bosch, he witnesses some horrific things, but he finds solace in his religion. He’s a bit of an eccentric, and his quirks make him one of the more memorable recurring characters in the show. He appears in three episodes of Bosch: Legacy, but these are all in the first season.

10 Cynthia Kaye Williams as Detective Joan Bennett

3 episodes

Detective Bennett looking at a computer with Maurice in Bosch: Legacy

Joan Bennett is a detective in the arson squad of the Robbery Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department. She’s partnered with Detective Pell, and the pair are assigned to an arson case at a retirement home when a fire kills a retired detective. Bosch takes an interest in the case because of his personal connection to the detective, and he works closely with Bennett as a result. Bennett and Edgar start a relationship after his marriage breaks down. Like Edgar, Bennett appears in Bosch: Legacy season 2, episode 1, “The Lady Vanishes,” as well as two episodes in the first season.

9 Barry Livingston as Gary Potter

1 episode

Gary Potter and Bosch

Gary Potter is a coroner’s investigator in Los Angeles, and he is an infrequent recurring character in Bosch. In season 4, episode 1, “Ask the Dust,” he investigates the murder of a well-known civil rights attorney, and this means he has to team up with Harry Bosch. He isn’t a regular detective, but his knowledge and his sharp mind provide key insights into the case. He only appears in three episodes of Bosch, so it was surprising that he returned for Bosch: Legacy in season 1, episode 6, “Chain of Authenticity.”

8 Reed Diamond as Vincent Franzen

1 episode

Vincent Franzen becomes one of Honey Chandler’s clients in season 7. He’s a hedge fund manager arrested for allegedly running a Ponzi scheme which netted him hundreds of millions of dollars. He is only in one episode, and he is also in just a single episode of Bosch: Legacy, season 1, episode 2, “Pumped.” He doesn’t contribute much to the plot, but his presence builds another link between the original series of Bosch and its sequel series.

7 Stephanie Erb as Amanda Scones

2 episodes

DDA Amanda Scones in Bosch

Like Vincent Franzen, Amanda Scones only appears in a single episode of Bosch. However, her role is even less noticeable. As Deputy District Attorney, she cross-examines Harry Bosch in season 3, episode 1, “The Smog Cutter.” This minor role gets a call back in Bosch: Legacy, and she has appeared in one episode of each season so far. She is still a very minor character, and it’s very difficult to recognize that she’s the same character who first appeared in a brief scene all the way back in season 3 of Bosch.

6 Don Luce as Willy Datz

2 episodes

Willy Datz in prison in Bosch: Legacy

Willy Datz is a hitman in Bosch who gets tracked down and imprisoned after fulfilling a contract for an organized crime syndicate. In Bosch: Legacy, Datz is in prison. He agrees to help Bosch and Chandler with their investigation, but he gets stabbed for his troubles, and he dies at the hands of the Russian mob. Datz didn’t have a huge role in Bosch, but he was brought back in an interesting way for Bosch: Legacy and his small part helped move the plot forwards, while revealing a little bit more about the mysterious figure.

5 Troy Evans as Detective “Barrel” Johnson

4 episodes

Crate and Barrell in Bosch.

Detective Barrel is never seen without his taller counterpart, Detective Crate. The two detectives are present in every season of Bosch, and they often provide a lot of comic relief just when the events of the show threaten to get too dark and gritty. They aren’t stereotypical bumbling cops, however, and they can still put in some fine detective work. In Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 4, “Horsehoes and Hand Grenades,” Bosch enlists them to help him with surveillance on Carl Rogers and his associates. Over the first two seasons of Bosch: Legacy, they appear in four episodes.

4 Gregory Scott Cummins as Detective Robert “Crate” Moore

4 episodes

Crate and Barrell in Bosch

It would be strange for either Crate or Barrel to appear on their own, and Bosch: Legacy keeps their dynamic alive. When they catch up with Bosch, they reveal that they have also retired from the LAPD, but they retain some key contacts from their time on the force. Crate and Barrel could easily appear in one or two episodes of season 3 of Bosch: Legacy as well. Their roles developed throughout the duration of Bosch, as they transitioned from the butt of every joke to more directly involved characters with their own story lines, but they are consistently fun to watch.

3 Eric Ladin as Scott Anderson

3 episodes

Scott Anderson looking to his left in Bosch.

Scott Anderson is a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times, and his work often causes him to clash with Harry Bosch and other detectives. Anderson believes in his mission to expose corruption in the LAPD, but sometimes his journalistic practices are hasty and unrefined, so he is prone to false accusations or misrepresenting the truth. He is up to more of the same in Bosch: Legacy. He doesn’t appear in the first season, but makes his return in season 2, episode 5, “Hollywood Forever.”

2 Chris Browning as Preston Borders

1 episode

Preston Borders berates his lawyers in court in Bosch

Preston Borders is one of the most memorable antagonists of Bosch. In season 5, he is arrested and tried for murder. There is only enough evidence to convict him of one murder, but Bosch believes that he is responsible for at least two more. He makes a surprise cameo in Bosch: Legacy season 2, episode 10, “A Step Ahead,” when he calls Maddie from prison with a message for her father. Chris Browning also plays a villain in The Lincoln Lawyer. Bosch and The Lincoln Lawyer are connected in multiple ways, not just the fact that they are both based on books written by Michael Connelly.

1 Lance Reddick as Irvin Irving

1 episode

Lance Reddick standing next to Bosch on Bosch

Lance Reddick is one of the highlights of Bosch as LAPD Chief Irvin Irving. He and Harry Bosch clash frequently, as Bosch is always causing trouble for the LAPD, but he uncovers evidence of Irving’s corruption. Irving is a major character in Bosch, but his only appearance in Bosch: Legacy comes in the finale of season 2. He talks to Chandler, and it’s revealed that he is now working in the private sector. Actor Lance Reddick sadly passed away in March 2023, but Bosch fans were treated to one final appearance from him.
