Alita Battle Angel Trailer: A New Kind of Hero is Born

Rosa Salazar stars as Alita in the first trailer for Alita Battle Angel. 20th Century Fox is diving into the world of manga adaptations here, with director Robert Rodriguez overseeing this particular take. Based on the Japanese manga, Alita is the latest attempt by a major studio to bring a manga to life. The story follows a female cyborg in a dystopian future, and marks a big time role for Salazar. Following roles in The Maze Runner franchise, Insurgent, and more, Salazar is positioned to break out.

The likes of Jackie Earle Haley, Mahershala Ali, Christoph Waltz, and others join Salazar in supporting roles here. Haley previously teased the unique experience of filming his completely CG character. The first Alita Battle Angel footage was released yesterday, but now the full-length trailer for the movie has been released online.

Here is the official synopsis for Alita Battle Angel, which arrived with the trailer:

Visionary filmmakers James Cameron (AVATAR) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) create a groundbreaking new heroine in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL, an action-packed story of hope, love and empowerment. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita (Rosa Salazar) is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. Everything is new to Alita, every experience a first. As she learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield Alita from her mysterious past while her street-smart new friend, Hugo (Keean Johnson), offers instead to help trigger her memories. A growing affection develops between the two until deadly forces come after Alita and threaten her newfound relationships. It is then that Alita discovers she has extraordinary fighting abilities that could be used to save the friends and family she’s grown to love. Determined to uncover the truth behind her origin, Alita sets out on a journey that will lead her to take on the injustices of this dark, corrupt world, and discover that one young woman can change the world in which she lives.

As indicated by the trailer and synopsis, the presence of Cameron and Rodriguez is felt throughout. Alita is shown as a live-action/CGI hybrid character. Salazar can still be seen through the visual effects, but the creative decision to make her look this way certainly stands out. From Alita’s big brown eyes to her cyborg limbs, she is truly a character that will stand out. Plus, with several months still to come before the film hits theaters, the CGI on Alita and the rest of the world will only improve.

Outside of Alita, the trailer also offers up a decent sized look at Iron City and the characters that Alita will cross paths with. The characters that gets the most attention are Hugo (Keean Johnson) and Ido (Christoph Waltz). Both are shown interacting several times with Alita, while we also get to see her battle Zapan (Ed Skrein). Additional scenes show Chiren (Jennifer Connely) and Vector (Masherala Ali) too.
