Alien: Romulus’ Connection To The Franchise’s Most Divisive Movie Can Redeem A 48% Rotten Tomatoes Failure

The promising Alien: Romulus‘s connection to the franchise’s most divisive movie has the potential to redeem the Alien franchise’s biggest critical failure. The upcoming Alien: Romulus will be the ninth entry in the Alien franchise, and with Alien: Romulus‘s timeline being set in between Alien and Aliens, will provide an interesting connection to the expansive lore of the beloved sci-fi series. The Alien: Romulus trailer features the Pulse Rifle, which is already a good sign regarding the movie’s respect for the iconic franchise, but one character in the trailer suggests redemption for the Alien series’ biggest failure.

One of Alien‘s greatest claims to fame is its iconic Xenomorphs, and the sheer amount of destruction that they leave in their wake whenever they’re onscreen. However, another great element of the series is each entry’s characters and the excellent performances of the actors portraying them. While the Alien franchise is notable for many great things, one entry in the franchise continues to divide audiences decades after its theatrical release. However, the tension and excitement from Alien: Romulus‘s trailer combined with its timeline could redeem the poorly-received entry.

Alien Movies In Order (Release & Chronological)

From Ridley Scott’s Alien to the sci-fi franchise’s prequel series beginning with Prometheus, here’s how to watch the Alien movies in order.

Aileen Wu’s Alien: Romulus Character Is A Clear Alien 3 Link

Aileen Wu’s character has a shaved head similar to Ripley in Alien 3.

Aileen Wu looks frightened in a scene from Alien Romulus.

Although shown briefly throughout the trailer, up and comer Aileen Wu can be seen throughout the trailer with a shaved head as she and her fellow newcomers attempt to survive the unrelenting Xenomorph threat. What’s particularly interesting about Wu’s yet-unnamed character is that she has a shaved head, similar to Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley from Alien 3. While the connection is easy to miss, Wu’s character sporting a shaved head suggests a connection to her character, and, more importantly, the events of Alien: Romulus and Alien 3.

As seen in Alien 3, Ripley exchanges her curly brown hair for a shaved head in an effort to blend in with the primarily male prison population aboard the prison colony she infiltrates throughout the movie. While the shaven head look suits the movie’s aesthetic, it was also done so Ripley could avoid letting on that she’s a woman, which would result in Ripley likely being assaulted by some of the prison’s truly despicable inmates should they detect her true identity. Although the connection to Wu’s character and Ripley isn’t confirmed, it suggests how Alien: Romulus can redeem Alien 3.

Alien: Romulus Can Rehabilitate Alien 3

Alien: Romulus’s trailer already looks a lot better than Alien 3.

Sigourney Weaver as Ripley turns away from a Xenomorph in Alien 3

Alien 3 is one of the most hated entries in any movie franchise, and the pacing, handling of its characters and lore, and decision to kill Ripley contribute to its reputation. However, with the impressive visuals and genuine terror that Alien: Romulus‘s teaser trailer evokes, and its possible connection to the upcoming sci-fi thriller, it could be redeemed. Alien: Romulus could introduce newer versions of the Xenomorphs that could reinvent the franchise, and Wu’s possible connection to Ripley could make the newer characters more endearing, which would at least partially redeem Alien 3.
