In 2010, we got a new take on Lewis Carroll’s classic fantasy novel Alice in Wonderland courtesy of Tim Burton’s Gothic imagination. Two years later, Disney decided to move forward with the sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, leaving Burton as producer and with The Muppets director, James Bobin, on the lead.
Disney has now released the first full-length trailer for Through the Looking Glass, much to the delight of fans who were left wanting more after the teasers that were released during the build-up to the trailer launch. While the first official posters (featuring Alice and the Mad Hatter) were released in August, the Mouse House has since unveiled individual character posters for the Alice in Wonderland sequel.
These posters feature some of the characters we saw in Alice in Wonderland, as well as one new face from Alice’s return trip through Underland: the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), Time (Sacha Baron Cohen), and, of course, Alice (Mia Wasikowska). These characters can be seen holding what at first sight looks like a golden snitch but it’s, in fact, a Chronosphere – a metallic globe inside the chamber of the Grand Clock, which allows time traveling (a key element of the story for Through the Looking Glass).

Penned by Linda Woolverton (Maleficent), Alice Through the Looking Glass gets its title from Carroll’s book sequel, “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There”. After following her father’s footsteps and sailing the seas (as seen at the end of Alice in Wonderland), Alice returns to London where she comes across with a magical glass that leads her back to Underland. Alice reunites with some of her old friends, but finds the Mad Hatter is not as she remembers. With the help of the White Queen, Alice goes back in time to save the Mad Hatter from a dark fate. Little does she know, she will encounter some old and new friends and enemies, such as Time himself.
It’s important to remember that, just like its predecessor, this new Alice movie will have major changes from its literary source material, such as the addition of time-traveling. However, judging by the posters and trailer, it all points at it keeping its surrealist style, something that fans felt the first movie lacked. Tim Burton fans can sleep peacefully knowing that he is serving as producer for this movie, so we might still see some of his touch of magic in it, too.
Alice Through the Looking Glass will be released in the U.S on May 27th, 2016.
