Ahsoka’s Intergalactic Travel Retcons A Key Mandalorian Season 2 Moment

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Ahsoka episode 8.

The hyperspace ring technology used to travel between galaxies in Ahsoka was actually set up by Star Wars in The Mandalorian season 2. The Eye of Sion is the massive ring that allows Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Imperial Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, to dock and launch back to the main Star Wars galaxy. Based on the technology of the Jedi’s hyperspace rings used for their starfighters during the Clone Wars, this is so far the only known way to enter hyperspace between galaxies – aside from riding the purrgil star whales.

Morgan Elsbeth is the one who oversees the construction of the massive Eye of Sion hyperspace ring, something that certainly isn’t built overnight. Despite this, Morgan has only just been released from captivity by Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati when the Eye of Sion is revealed, which means that her work on it must have started well before Ahsoka first captures Morgan in The Mandalorian season 2. This no longer has to be an assumption, as Star Wars actually set up the Eye of Sion’s construction three years ago.

Morgan Elsbeth’s Eye Of Sion Was Teased In The Mandalorian Season 2

Morgan is introduced in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 5 as the tyrannical magistrate of the city of Calodan, and her brief backstory is provided by Ahsoka as she and Din Djarin make plans to capture her. When Ahsoka tells Din that Morgan plundered worlds to help create the Imperial Starfleet, Din comments that it “looks like she’s still in business,” seeing as Calodan had also been stripped nearly bare by her. At this point, however, Morgan wouldn’t have been helping to make more ships for the Imperial Starfleet. She had been using Calodan to create the Eye of Sion hyperspace ring, much of which was constructed with materials similar to those of the Imperial Star Destroyers.

Morgan’s Sacrifice For Thrawn Becomes Even More Tragic

Morgan, then, has been constructing the Eye of Sion for quite a long time – which makes the ending of her story even more tragic. The Nightsister dedicated her life to building this technology just to reach her fellow Nightsisters and Thrawn on Peridea, and when that sweet moment of glory finally arrives, Morgan has to sacrifice herself to let her beloved people escape and return home to Dathomir. It’s reminiscent of Director Orson Krennic’s ending in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which he was destroyed by the very weapon, the Death Star, he spent so long putting together. Morgan poured so much of herself into the Eye of Sion, and she didn’t even get to take its journey back home to Dathomir.

Now that Morgan’s sacrifice has worked to allow Thrawn, the Great Mothers, and the Nightsister crates to return to the main Star Wars galaxy and make their home base on Dathomir, the Nightsisters will once again be able to have a civilization. For now, the Great Mothers continue to serve Thrawn, but that could change – especially given the disillusionment they started to show in the Ahsoka finale. What’s known for now is that Morgan never truly wanted to serve the Empire or help the Imperial Starfleet; rather, she was doing all she did for Dathomir, and that was the work she was seen doing on Calodan three years ago.
