After Tales Of The Empire, We Know Exactly What Star Wars TV Show Should Come Next

Star Wars has just announced its newest series of animated shorts, Tales of the Empire, but it seems viewers already know what story Lucasfilm should tell next. Tales of the Empire will be replacing Tales of the Jedi season 2, and will instead follow two characters, Barriss Offee and Lady Morgan Elsbeth, on their journeys to becoming a part of the Empire. While Tales of the Jedi season 1 focused on Count Dooku and Ahsoka Tano, Tales of the Empire will focus on new and often untold stories in Star Wars.

With the Star Wars galaxy rapidly expanding, it’s no wonder why Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni is looking to diversify the kinds of stories Star Wars tells. The franchise is no longer about Jedi versus Sith, but instead has brought in a plethora of new voices that help give a galaxy far, far away an added level of history and storytelling. Recent Star Wars projects like The Mandalorian and Star Wars: The Bad Batch still deal with Jedi and the Force, but ground themselves in characters who aren’t Force-sensitive and who aren’t Jedi.

Barriss Offee

The Mirialan apprentice of Luminara Unduli, Barriss Offee became disillusioned with the Jedi Order during the Clone Wars. She ultimately betrayed the Jedi, even launching a terrorist attack on the Jedi Temple itself, and framed Ahsoka for the crime. Exposed, Barriss was imprisoned – but she was recovered by the Empire shortly after Revenge of the Sith, joining the ranks of the Imperial Inquisitors.

When Tales of the Jedi was released in October 2022, there was speculation over which Jedi Lucasfilm could or would focus on next. Many offered suggestions like Kanan Jarrus, Mace Windu, or Master Yoda; however, others were looking for something else entirely. There were suggestions that Lucasfilm should be producing a Tales of the Sith show, which would focus on Sith characters inside the Star Wars universe, like Palpatine, Darth Vader, or even Darth Plagueis. However, Tales of the Empire is doing something that Tales of the Sith isn’t: it’s filling in vital gaps in the Star Wars timeline.

For many years, there was speculation about what happened to Ahsoka Tano’s Clone Wars-era nemesis, Barriss Offee, and Tales of the Empire will be filling in that gap. Additionally, Barriss Offee’s story will also finally show audiences how Darth Vader trained his Imperial Inquisitors. Not only will Barriss’ story be bringing back iconic characters like Darth Vader, but it will also see the return of different Inquisitors, most notably the Grand Inquisitor, voiced once again by Jason Isaacs.

Tales of the Empire Proves that “Tales” Stories Don’t Need to Focus on Force-Sensitives

Morgan Elsbeth

Hailing from the planet Dathomir, Morgan Elsbeth’s people were almost wiped out during the Clone Wars after their leader, Mother Talzin, became a rival to Darth Sidious himself. Morgan swore loyalty to the Empire, and became a close associate of Grand Admiral Thrawn himself. When Thrawn was stranded in a distant galaxy, she spearheaded efforts to retrieve him, prompted by visions cast by the Great Mothers of Peridea. She was sacrificed by Thrawn to buy him time to escape Peridea, with Ahsoka and her allies stranded there.

While there is still a lot of Jedi history to explore, Tales of the Empire shows that Lucasfilm doesn’t need to focus on the stories of Force-sensitive individuals to be interesting or good. Compelling stories can be told in animation and can focus on the so-called “bad guys.” Not only that, but Tales of the Empire will be showing different points of view of events that have been previously explored.

The best example of this is the decimation of the Nightsisters of Dathomir. General Grievous’ attack on the clan of witches was previously explored in Star Wars: The Clone Wars season 4. The attack was ordered after Asajj Ventress failed to assassinate her former master, Count Dooku, and instead had his droid army launch an attack, nearly wiping out all the Nightsisters. Lady Morgan Elsbeth was one of the few to survive, and her perspective of the decimation of her sisters will be a focus of one of the episodes of Tales of the Empire.

Tales Of The Mandalorians Would Be The Perfect Clone Wars Successor

Tales of the Mandalorians Can Fill in Missing Clone Wars Stories

Bo-Katan Kryze

The sister of Satine Kryze, Bo-Katan allied with extremist factions of Mandalore – unwittingly dividing her people, creating opportunities for the Separatists and Darth Maul. Bo-Katan spent much of her life seeking redemption, attempting to unite the Mandalorians against the Empire, but ultimately surrendered to Moff Gideon in an attempt to save her people from a genocidal Imperial attack. In The Mandalorian era, Bo-Katan has successfully reclaimed Mandalore and become the new Man’dalore – her people’s chosen ruler.

Tales of the Empire is opening up new possibilities for what can be told in animated shorts, so Lucasfilm should turn their focus to Mandalore next. While The Mandalorian is great and gives audiences a lot of new knowledge about the Mandalorian people, there are still a lot of gaps. It would be compelling for a season of Tales of the Mandalorian to follow Bo-Katan Kryze and her older sister, Duchess Satine Kryze. Satine’s storyline could show her early encounters with Obi-Wan Kenobi, and her struggles to keep Mandalore as a pacifist world, and could end with her death.

However, Bo-Katan Kryze may present the most compelling character study. It’s not really known what Bo-Katan and her Nite Owls did following the death of Pre Vizsla, so seeing that would be interesting. Additionally, seeing Bo-Katan’s reaction to her sister’s death, or the events leading to the Night of a Thousand Tears, would be compelling. Because Bo-Katan has such a storied history, there are a ton of different directions that Dave Filoni could take Bo-Katan’s story, and that alone makes Tales of the Mandalorian seem even more inviting of an endeavor.

Tales of the Empire may be the gateway to seeing many different and new stories being told in the coming years, and that’s for the best. While not every character or group of people can have a television show or movie dedicated to them, the “Tales” format provides a compelling way to tell these stories. Whether or not Lucasfilm continues with this series of shorts remains to be seen, but either way, Tales of the Empire will be an interesting look at a different side of Star Wars.
