After Life was one of the best shows that Netflix produced last year, and it was a real return to the top table for Ricky Gervais, who has been able to produce a series of classics throughout the course of his career.
Now, one of the biggest questions of all is whether or not they can follow up with a strong second season. While there hasn’t been an official release date as of yet, we’d guess that it’ll appear on our screens before the end of 2020. As such, we want to throw out a few predictions that we’ve conjured up.
The Wonder of Brandy
What a beautiful dog. Brandy was positioned, largely, as the reason why Tony didn’t actually kill himself in the first season. He came downstairs and realized that the dog needed to be fed—and that, above all else, was his focus.
Brandy is a gorgeous dog, and that much is just kind of obvious, and we’d love to see their relationship expand as the second season progresses. After all, what’s better than watching a man and his dog share some lovely moments with one another? Spoiler: the answer is nothing.
Some Kind Of Trip
We don’t know why, but we’re really interested in the idea of seeing Tony go on a trip somewhere. We aren’t entirely sure where he’d go or what he’d do, whether it’s with his new partner or not, but he needs to get out and explore parts of the world that he wouldn’t have thought to visit in the past. They could always keep it local and we’d enjoy that, too, but taking the production outside of its comfort zone often serves as the making of most great television shows.
Daphne’s Development
Daphne started off as someone that didn’t really seem to be all that relevant in the bigger picture of things, but, as time went on, we really enjoyed how she started to interact with Tony. It seems as if she’s going to move away from her former career path and onto something different, which isn’t only good for Daphne but is also good for the flow of the show. What exactly is she going to do next? Either way, we’re eager to find out, because the show would be at a big loss without her.
A Tragedy
We aren’t necessarily saying that a tragedy of any kind would be a good thing, because it obviously wouldn’t.
However, dealing with that tragedy could be quite interesting for Tony to deal with. Whether it impacts him directly or it doesn’t, After Life has always forced the viewers—and Tony—to come to terms with bad things that have happened. They shouldn’t drop that theme just because everything started to look up at the end of the first season. We all know that isn’t how life works, and the show should prove that.
Brian The Hoarder
Everyone loved Brian; he was super weird and would do literally anything to get in the paper. Still, that was the most British thing we’d seen in a long time, so we were okay with it.
Given the fact that he accomplished his goal, there’s a decent chance he might not feature at all in the second season, but we think they’ll find a spot for him. It may only be a cameo and nothing more, but that still holds a lot of value to fans of the first season.
Great Tony One-Liners
From the breast milk to the insult directed towards the small ginger kid, it was difficult not to fall over laughing at just about everything Tony came out with in the first season. It was getting progressively more and more outrageous as the series went on, obviously, because he just didn’t seem to care anymore.
As much as we wanted to see him get pulled out of the funk and depression that he found himself in, the jokes along the way offered some comedic relief in an otherwise sad situation.
Flashbacks Of Lisa
The death of Lisa is the central theme of the entire show and is the reason why Tony is so depressed when we first meet him. So, with that in mind, we wouldn’t be shocked if Lisa appears again from time to time. We know that Tony needs to move on with the rest of his life, but we’d all like to see a few more flashbacks of how happy they were together. Instead of that getting him down, it should be a motivating factor behind his decision to keep going.
Sandy’s Growth
Sandy was introduced as the protégé to Tony in many ways, and that was an interesting role to introduce into the mix. Nobody really knew one way or another whether or not Tony was going to treat her like garbage as he did with everyone, but, in the end, they were pretty lovely to one another. Let’s see how Sandy grows and develops as a character because the potential is definitely there for all to see. Will she start to get a bit of an edge herself? It’s possible, in our opinion.
Kath Hitting Back
Kath’s attempts to jab back and forth with Tony kind of failed in the first season, and, more often than not, she just sort of sat back and took his abuse (if you can really call it that).
She may have been a slightly annoying character to have around, but the best way to change that is by having her really sink her teeth into Tony if he even remotely tries to tear her down. Again, it’s all about opening the eyes of Tony to see how his words can impact the ones he loves—even if he won’t admit that he loves them in the first place.
Tony Helping Matt
We saw Matt attempt to help Tony through some incredibly tough times as the first season drew on, and, while he didn’t always accomplish that goal, he certainly gave it his best shot.
So, why not try and flip the script with Tony being the one that needs to help Matt? Whether it’s grief over Lisa or another personal issue he’s suffering from, Tony needs to understand the pain of others. We started to see that story play out in the final few episodes, so let’s expand upon that a bit.
