After 48 Years, Punisher’s Nemesis Jigsaw Gets the Upgrade He Deserves

Warning: contains spoilers for Punisher #3!

After 48 years, Punisher’s nemesis Jigsaw finally gets the upgrade he deserves. There is a new Punisher in the Marvel Universe, Joe Garrison, who is heading down the same dark path as Frank Castle. As Garrison grows into his new role, a face from Frank’s past returns: Jigsaw. In Punisher #3, the villain, for reasons unknown, has returned with a massive upgrade–and with the new Punisher in his sights.

The new Jigsaw makes its debut in Punisher #3, written by David Pepose and drawn by Dave Wachter. While Joe Garrison fights FearMaster, his handler, Triple A, is attacked by a group of hooded soldiers and taken prisoner. After Garrison disposes of FearMaster, he receives a call on his cell phone, and the caller ID displays a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. The person on the line tells Garrison not to interfere with their plans, or else Triple A will be killed.

It is revealed to be Jigsaw, now the head of a massive criminal empire, complete with trained assassins.

A New Punisher Calls for a New Jigsaw

A new era is dawning for the Punisher. Frank Castle, who had held the role for nearly 50 years, was shunted off to another reality, leaving the title up for grabs. Former SHIELD agent Joe Garrison’s family was murdered by unknown forces. Seeking revenge, Garrison took up the mantle of the Punisher and began exacting brutal revenge. Joe’s quest has brought him into the path of Jigsaw–who may have a connection to the tragedy that killed the Punisher’s family.

Jigsaw is one of the most lethal killers in the Marvel Universe and one of the Punisher’s biggest foes. In his original civilian identity, Jigsaw was responsible for killing Frank Castle’s family in a gangland shooting gone awry. After becoming the Punisher, Frank disfigured Jigsaw, giving him the distinctive look he has today. Jigsaw is warp and woof with the Punisher, and has appeared in both the 2008 film Punisher War Zone and the Netflix Punisher television show. The tension between Frank and Jigsaw helped make the villain one of Marvel’s most hated.

Marvel’s New Jigsaw Could Be One of Its Deadliest Villains

Despite being one of the Punisher’s oldest foes, Jigsaw still ranks as one of Marvel’s most underrated villains–but this new upgrade could potentially push him into the big leagues. Jigsaw was cold and calculating, traits that would serve him well as the head of a large criminal syndicate. As seen in the hooded, ninja-like assassins at his disposal, Jigsaw has found an army, one he plans to use to crush the new Punisher before his career can even start. Frank Castle was unable for 48 years to stop Jigsaw, and now the villain finally gets the upgrade he deserves.
