After 40 Years, X-Men Finally Revealed an Iconic Hero’s True Form

Throughout their publication history, the X-Men have welcomed some of Marvel Comics’ most outlandish heroes into their ranks. From Maggot to Marrow, the Merry Mutants have never shied away from fighting along more unconventionally designed heroes. But after decades of publication history, one of the X-Men’s strangest icons, Warlock, has finally revealed his true form.

In 2022’s Legion of X #7 by S Spurrier, Netho Diaz, Sean Parsons, Federico Blee, and Clayton Cowles, Doug Ramsey aka Cypher and his soul-bonded selffriend Warlock enter the Astral Plane guarded by Legion. Appearing in a golden humanoid form, Warlock initially goes unrecognized by Professor X’s son.

Speaking to David, the mutant seer Blindfold says, “Here…here on the edge of the Astral Plane…in a sphere unburdened by technology…yes…here we see what lies behind the froth and quicksilver…,” explaining Warlock’s appearance. And considering Warlock’s usual appearance, it’s truly abnormal how normal his true self really looks.

Warlock Is One Of Krakoa’s Strangest-Looking Heroes

His Techno-Shapeshifting Makes Him Completely Mercurial

X-Men Warlock True Form

First appearing in New Mutants #18 by Chris Claremont, Bill Sienkiewicz, Glynis Win, and Tom Orzechowski, Warlock is a techno-organic member of the alien A.I. known as the Technarchy. A mutant among his kind, Warlock lacks a truly constant physical form due to his race’s innate shapeshifting abilities. Usually adopting a vaguely humanoid form to fight alongside his friends in the X-Men, Warlock has been a part of their family for decades. But after all these years, they, and the fans, are finally getting an idea of how Warlock’s soul truly looks.

Considering his soul-bond with Doug and his years-long association with the mutant heroes of Earth, it’s not shocking that Warlock’s own self-image would so closely resemble the selffriends that he considers his family. After all, Warlock has turned away from the more malevolent tendencies of the Technarchy and his father, the Magus, in favor of Earth’s mutants countless times. In every way that matters, Warlock is one of the X-Men, and Earth – and Doug – are his home, so it’s only natural for him to think of himself along more human lines.

The X-Men Are Warlock’s Family

He Wants To Look Just Like His Selffriends

Without one constant physical form, Warlock has always been one of the mutants’ more visually stimulating allies, but he’s always fought beside the X-Men as if he were as human as they are. With the techno-organic hero’s own self-image reflecting those of his found family, the Astral Plane seems to have brought the alien New Mutant closer into the fold than ever before. And with Warlock’s own self-image clearly reflecting his love for Cypher and the X-Men, there’s no doubting Warlock’s loyalty to Marvel Comics’ Merry Mutants.
