A sequel to Adam Sandler’s animated comedy Leo has been confirmed by Netflix. Directed by Robert Marianetti, David Wachtenheim and Robert Smigel, the movie follows the titular character, a pet lizard who grapples with an existential crisis and longs for the world outside his classroom. Sandler, who also served as the producer, voiced the titular character, while the rest of the Leo cast features Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, Rob Scheinder, and Allison Strong, among others.
Now, during an earnings call (via The Wrap), Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix, confirmed that the popular streamer has already discussed a potential sequel for Leo. Sarandos specifically stated that the team was already “kicking around Leo 2,” while also adding that “the animation team is firing on all cylinders.”
What Leo 2 Could Possibly Be About
Following Leo’s generally positive reviews and solid viewership figures, it was always likely that Netflix would produce a sequel. The ending saw the titular lizard reunite with the students after the substitute teacher, Ms. Malkin, left him in the everglades out of jealousy for helping his class overcome their issues. Also, it was revealed that Leo and his best friend Squirtle had been assigned to be the class pets of the kindergarten students instead of the fifth-graders.
The Leo ending leaves room for Netflix to develop multiple storylines, which could involve a time jump that shows the main character and Squirtle in the future, exploring how well they are getting along with their new classmates. It could also feature a storyline where Leo reunites with the movie’s main cast for another round of adventure.
