Actors Who Almost Played DCEU’s Steve Trevor

Chris Pine has been playing Steve Trevor since 2017’s Wonder Woman, but he’s not the only actor who auditioned for the role – and others came close to nabbing it from him. Debuting in Patty Jenkins’ smash hit, the character was introduced as Diana Prince’s (Gal Gadot) love interest. A World War I pilot, Trevor accidentally crash-landed in Themyscira where he met the Amazonian Goddess and her people. He functioned as the bridge between the hidden paradise and the real world, and he inspired Diana to use her powers to help mankind.

Steve Trevor tragically died at the end of the original Wonder Woman film, but miraculously, Trevor is confirmed to return several decades later in Wonder Woman 1984. Details about his upcoming appearance are still scant at the moment, with Warner Bros. and the people involved in the film keeping mum about how he’s able to resurrect from the dead – though tie-in materials may have spoiled that part for readers. That said, it’s safe to assume that he’ll be significant in Diana’s new mission against Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) and Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal).

It makes sense Jenkins wanted to bring back Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman 1984 considering that great chemistry between Pine and Gadot. That said, there was a time that Warner Bros. was looking at other actors to play Wonder Woman’s love interest in the DCEU, with Scott Eastwood reportedly one of their front-runners. Prior to Pine’s casting, the studio apparently offered him two roles in the franchise – either play Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman or have a smaller part in Suicide Squad. Eastwood supposedly picked the David Ayer film, despite less screen time as Lt. GQ Edwards, because of their previous collaboration in the war movie Fury. Since passing up for the job, Eastwood has appeared in a string of other blockbusters such as The Fate of the Furious (2017) and Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), as well as the war drama The Outpost (2020).

Another actor reportedly on WB’s shortlist for Steve Trevor was Alexander Skarsgård. The Swedish actor is best known for his roles on the small screen, including playing Brad “Iceman” Colbert in Generation Kill (2008); Eric Northman in True Blood (2008-2014); and Perry White in Big Little Lies (2017-2019). That said, he has also dabbled on films playing the titular role in The Legend of Tarzan (2016). Skarsgård auditioned for the DCEU gig but unfortunately didn’t get it. Since then, he’s appeared in a variety of projects like the crime thriller The Hummingbird Project (2018) and the romantic comedy Long Shot (2019). He also played Gadi Becker in BBC One’s miniseries, The Little Drummer Girl (2018).

Rounding up WB’s reported shortlist for Steve Trevor is Liam Hemsworth, who supposedly also auditioned for the character like Skarsgård. The brother of Marvel’s Thor actor, Chris Hemsworth, this isn’t the first time that the Australian actor tried to play a comic book character, as he also screen-tested for the God of Thunder back in the late 2000s. Best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games franchise, Hemsworth has starred in few other films after failing to secure the role of Diana’s love interest in Wonder Woman, including the romantic comedy Isn’t It Romantic (2019) and, most recently, the thriller Arkansas (2020).
