Acclaimed Mangaka’s First Anime Adaptation Looks Stunning in Epic New Trailer

Production +h.’s upcoming adaptation of Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is in the spotlight again with a new trailer. This latest sneak peek revealed more scenes to expect from the duology of films, confirming their theatrical release dates of March 22 and April 19, respectively. Fans of Inio Asano’s apocalyptic drama can rest easy knowing that the movies will come out in the next two months.

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction marks the first time one of Asano’s stories will receive an anime adaptation. As the author has a history of mixing cozy character designs with pitch-black dramas, it makes the duology’s existence all the more remarkable in the current anime landscape.

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction is arguably Asano’s most outlandish yet approachable story, as the opening premise of a looming alien invasion provides an explosive spectacle to complement the character drama.

Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction Reveals More Stunning Imagery

The upcoming films will be directed by Tomoyuki Kurokawa, with a script by Reiko Yoshida

The trailer, which has been uploaded online to GAGA’s YouTube account, shows more scenes from the movies, including extra scenes of protagonists Kadode and Ouran’s daily lives. As the clip ends by reiterating the release dates of the two movies, it is unclear which scenes will go where. Nonetheless, the new shots make for some compelling imagery, as the lives of the girls are overturned by an alien invasion that slowly turns more violent. The trailer also showcased more of the theme songs for the two movies, “Zett-Zett-Zett-Zett-Zettai Seiiki” and “Seishun Ōka”, performed by singer ano and YOASOBI vocalist Lilas Ikuta.

The two singers are also doing double duty in the movies by lending their voices to the two lead characters, with ano playing Ouran and Ikuta playing Kadode, perfectly fitting each of the lead protagonists. The original author, Inio Asano, is best known for the dark drama Goodnight Punpun, and while Dead Dead Demon’sDededede Destruction is visually more bombastic, it still shares many of the author’s familiar hallmarks, such as the interjection of outlandish imagery to disguise darker stories, be it a cutesy cartoon character representing a child from a broken home, or a giant flying saucer that rains down destruction on a city.

With March 22 only a few weeks away, and April following right behind, Dead Dead Demon’sDededede Destruction seems to be fully committed to its official release date, following the original announcement of the adaptation last year. Asano is well regarded by anime fans everywhere for his stories, so it is exciting to see one of them make the jump to the big screen. Thus far, there has been no indication that the duology will receive an English localization, but given Asano’s global notoriety, Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction could see future theatrical releases after its 2024 premiere, and perhaps pave the way for more Asano adaptations.
