Abbott Elementary Season 3’s Best New Character Is A Reminder To Watch This Underrated Comedy

The actor behind Abbott Elementary season 3’s best new character previously starred in an underrated comedy that is totally worth the watch. Abbott Elementary season 3 finally arrived in February 2024, returning to the chaotic halls and classrooms of the titular Philadelphia school. Shortly after the two-part season 3 premiere, Abbott Elementary was renewed for season 4, ensuring more hilarious hijinks for the teachers, students, and admin who make up Abbott Elementary‘s cast of characters in the future.

Several storylines from Abbott Elementary season 2 have carried over into season 3, including Janine and Gregory’s slow-burn romance. Season 3 has also seen the return of past characters like Janine’s ex-boyfriend Tariq to Abbott Elementary, as well as the introduction of some brand-new characters. The most prominent new character in Abbott Elementary season 3 might seem especially familiar since he’s played by an actor who was a major standout in a Max comedy series that was gone too soon.

The Abbott Elementary season 3 premiere introduced a new cohort of school district representatives, including their leader, Manny, played by Josh Segarra. Manny is looking to make a positive change in Philadelphia classrooms, which is why he offers Janine a fellowship. Though he comes off as sweet and genuine, Manny could end up having a villain arc in Abbott Elementary season 3 if he interferes with Janine and Gregory’s romance plot. If the actor looks familiar, it might be because Segarra played Lance Arroyo in all three seasons of the Max comedy, The Other Two, from 2019 to 2023.

Created by former Saturday Night Live writers, Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, The Other Two followed two down-on-their-luck siblings, Cary (Drew Tarver) and Brooke (Heléne Yorke) Dubek, who are forced to confront the state of their lives when their 13-year-old brother, Chase (Case Walker), becomes an overnight pop sensation. In Season 2, Cary and Brooke went from living in the shadow of their teen brother to their talk show tycoon mother, Pat (Molly Shannon). Season 3 finally saw the whole family achieve fame and success but at certain costs.

Segarra’s Lance was introduced in The Other Two‘s pilot as Brooke’s cringey and dim-witted (but ultimately sweet and caring) long-term boyfriend. On a quest to sort out her life and “chase dreams,” Brooke dumped Lance, and they proceeded to be on-again-off-again for the rest of the show’s run. Lance was meant to be a standard “dudebro” type, but he was also a dependable hypeman whose default positivity and supportive nature made him incredibly endearing. In a series about the corruption of fame, Lance was one of the only characters who remained kind-hearted and genuine the whole time.

Segarra has starred in other comedy shows since The Other Two concluded, but his charming performance as Manny in Abbott Elementary is especially reminiscent of his role as the lovable Lance. Each scene Manny appears in serves as a continuous, bittersweet reminder of how perfect Segarra was as Lance, which only reinforces the harsh reality that The Other Two is over. Abbott Elementary season 3 might be able to satisfy The Other Two fans’ cravings to some degree, but it’s more likely to spark the desire to return to the underrated series that was gone too soon.

Why The Other Two Ended After Season 3

The series ended amid a scandal involving the series’ creators

Curtis, Cary, Pat, Brooke, and Lance in The Other Two

Less than 24 hours before the season 3 finale premiered on June 29, 2023, it was confirmed that The Other Two would be coming to an end, with the upcoming episode serving as the last one. In a joint statement, Kelly and Schneider announced that it was their decision to end The Other Two with the third season. We always knew, both creatively and personally, that this was where we wanted to end [the characters’] stories,” they stated.

This announcement was released amid numerous complaints about Kelly and Schneider’s behavior in the writers’ room and on set of The Other Two, accusing the showrunners of creating a toxic work environment. These complaints involved allegations of verbal abuse against Kelly, which was allegedly enabled by Schneider. Both parties were cleared of wrongdoing following a formal HR investigation, but while there was no direct link between The Other Two ending and the complaints against the showrunners, the coincidental timing was hard to ignore.
