Abandoned Dev Explains Why 5-Second Trailer Took Up 5GB On PS5

Blue Box Game Studios, developer of the upcoming horror Abandoned, has revealed why the game’s PS5 app is 5GB in size, despite only containing a five-second-long teaser video. The PS5-exclusive game is set to release next year, but has already been controversial due to fan theories that Abandoned is associated with Hideo Kojima, as well as concern over Blue Box’s previous failed game releases.

Details on Abandoned‘s story, setting, and characters are not yet clear, with little indication of what the game will actually involve. The announcement trailer and screenshots have shown a first-person protagonist with a gun, seemingly lost in a forest. Not much else is known about the horror, which has been dubbed a “horror-shooter.” Players expected to learn more following the launch of the Abandoned PS5 trailers app in early August. After the app was delayed multiple times, many were disappointed to discover that, when live, the PS5 app didn’t contain any new trailers or gameplay, but instead simply showed a previously revealed five-second Abandoned teaser. The app caused even more confusion due to its 5GB file size, which has gone unexplained for some time.

In a new website FAQ, Blue Box Game Studios has revealed why the PS5 app download was so large despite a lack of content. According to the developer, last-minute technical issues caused the team to reassess the app’s launch, cutting down the opening teaser trailer to avoid further problems. This meant the 5GB file size, the size of the full-length teaser, remained the same. The website explains:

“As a result of technical issues we made it very hard for us last minute. We had to trim the opening teaser. The 5GB is the actual size of the full length. We will release the full teaser soon. We sincerely apologize for this.”

More content will be added to the realtime experience app in the future, though Blue Box hasn’t revealed when. The FAQ states: “Unfortunately we can’t provide an ETA [for future app content] just yet but we are working to release new content ASAP.”

The Abandoned app contains empty slots that will be filled with future updates, with spaces left for three trailers (a cinematic reveal, release trailer, and what’s expected to be Abandoned‘s gameplay trailer), as well as two gameplay demonstrations. While fans are still in the dark as to when new content might be launched, it’s possible that the team will delay any internally planned releases to avoid the backlash seen from previous app delays. The FAQ states that the game will now be releasing in 2022, meaning new content and demos could still be some months away.

Abandoned has had a controversial road since its reveal. Some still expect Abandoned to be related to Silent Hill, while others believe the app’s delays and lack of content aren’t genuine, and are instead a marketing ploy to generate more interest in the game. Despite being one of the most talked-about games of the year, Abandoned is still cloaked in mystery, and it’s hoped that future app updates will clear up more about the title.
