A new Avatar: The Last Airbender cosplay brings Aang’s massive flying bison to life. After becoming one of the most acclaimed Netflix series of all time, Avatar: The Last Airbender is getting a live-action adaptation. The Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series is set for release on February 22 and features a leading cast of Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Daniel Dae Kim, Ian Ousley, Dallas Lius, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee.
In new cosplay from @allison.chase.cosplay (photographed by Screen Rant) at Megacon, Appa comes to life. Set up on a series of rollers, the Appa cosplay is able to create movement that resembles the plodding gate of the loveable elephant in the show. The cosplayer’s face is not visible underneath the layers of fur.
In a video by the artist, Appa slightly moves as the cosplayer operates the costume from underneath. In this clip, one can see the fuller range of motion in this costume, wherein the head and feet can move in addition to the whole piece moving forward. How Will Appa Look In The Live-Action Series?
With his occasional roars and growls voiced by Dee Bradley Baker, Appa was one of the most beloved characters from the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated TV show. For one, the flying bison is a primary mode of transport for Aang, Sokka, and Katara throughout all three seasons of the show. Secondly, Appa is the last direct link that Aang has to his people and culture, for everyone else died off when the Fire Nation attacked a century prior.
As such, Appa will factor heavily in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the series. Based on the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer, the show will borrow Appa’s design fairly directly from the original series. As the live-action necessitates CGI, however, Appa’s implied fluff from the animated series will come even more to the fore.
So far, the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailers make it seem like the live-action team has done a fairly good job in rendering Appa. The flying bison was one of the weakest elements of M. Night Shyamalan’s panned 2010 film The Last Airbender, so as a result, he is one of the characters for whom fans are looking for the most improvement in the live-action series. Hopefully, they will get the beloved Appa they deserve as the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series releases at the end of the month.
