“A Wolverine Unlike Any Other”: Marvel’s New Wolverine Is the Darkest Version Ever – But Not for the Reason You Think

Marvel’s upcoming Weapons of X miniseries will introduce readers to versions of Wolverine unlike they’ve encountered before, including a darker Wolverine than ever – but this darkness is set to come in an unexpected way. Following the events of Original X-Men, with the latest threat to the Marvel Multiverse revealed to be a new version of Onslaught, a team of Wolverines must come together to save existence.

Weapon X-Men #2 is the second of four issues, promising to continue the adventures of a diverse squad of Wolverines, drawn together from different universes to fight off the threat of Onslaught. The miniseries will feature more than just the team’s attempt to protect the Multiverse, as it seems the inherent dramatic tensions of many Wolverines, forced to work together, will also be a driving factor in the story.

ONE HAPPY WOLVERINE! Across almost every universe in existence, Wolverine is driven by pain, by the sins of his past and his future. But one world – the very one that Onslaught has targeted next for annihilation – has a Wolverine unlike any other. A Wolverine…who got what he wanted. And for the Logan from Earth-X? That news just might be the claw in the coffin. The Phoenix’s handpicked Band of Logans go to war!

As the solicition issue teases, Onslaught poses an immediate threat to the seemingly unique universes where Logan has avoided the tragedy and despair that fuel most incarnations of the character.

Marvel Reveals The Bleak Multiverse Truth About Wolverine

Weapon X-Men #2 variant cover by Leinil Francis Yu, Wolverine freshly escaped from Weapon X trekking through snow

Taken at face value, the solicitation for Weapon X-Men #2 indicates that there is one – and only one – timeline in the Marvel Multiverse where Wolverine is happy. Describing this world’s Logan as “a Wolverine unlike any other. A Wolverine…who got what he wanted,” this solicitation hints at the unimaginable scope of Wolverine’s existential despair. As it turns out, he is statistically the least likely character in the Marvel Universe to achieve happiness. If there are infinite realities in the Multiverse, and only one contains a happy Wolverine, that means Logan’s chances of happiness are effectively 0.00%.

Worse, this singular Wolverine’s happiness is now threatened, as the latest version of X-Men villain Onslaught attempts to eliminate his timeline from the Multiverse. Even more heartbreaking still, this version of Onslaught is a corrupted version of Jean Grey, the love of Logan’s life in more than one reality. Only time will tell whether Marvel would deprive Logan of even one solitary universe where his existence isn’t pure tragedy and pain, or if the “Band of Logans” will be able to preserve this variant’s happiness.

The Cosmic Truth Might Be Too Much For Some Wolverines To Handle

The solicitation for Weapon X-Men #2 also contains the ominous suggestion that the realization of Wolverines’ consignment to cosmic despair, “just might be the claw in the coffin” for the Logan variant from “Earth X.” It is possible that Onslaught may not be the only threat to the lone Wolverine who “got what he wanted,” as another version, deprived of that luck and driven to an unimaginable level of despair by the knowledge, could be incredibly dangerous. In addition to a thrilling, high-stakes Multiversal adventure, Weapon X-Men may also unexpectedly give Marvel readers the darkest Wolverine story yet.

Weapon X-Men #2 will be released on April 11, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
