A Quiet Place: Day One Could Break A 6-Year-Old Franchise Record (& Smash A $1 Billion Barrier Too)

A Quiet Place: Day One Could Break A 6-Year-Old Franchise Record (& Smash A Billion Barrier Too)

Given the excitement ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One‘s release this summer, the film could potentially break some interesting box office records for the franchise. Day One is a prequel to A Quiet Place 1 & 2, which came out in 2018 and 2021, respectively. The original films, especially the first, were both financially successful, spawning a prequel and a third movie that would complete the original timeline trilogy. Although the third installment has been postponed once more, the prequel is scheduled to be released on June 28th, and Day One‘s full trailer has created great expectations.

A Quiet Place 1 & 2 revolve around the Abbott family’s survival on a post-apocalyptic planet more than a year after the arrival of a weird alien species that hunts people through sound. Day One, however, is set on the aliens’ invasion day and changes its lead characters. The film will be directed by Pig‘s director, Michael Sarnoski, who could add a very interesting angle to the franchise. Additionally, A Quiet Place: Day One‘s cast is quite exciting, featuring stars such as Djimon Hounsou and Lupita Nyong’o, indicating that this prequel could be a hit.

A Quiet Place: Day One Could Be The Franchise’s Highest-Grossing Movie Yet

A Quiet Place: Day One Could Break A 6-Year-Old Franchise Record (& Smash A Billion Barrier Too)

A Quiet Place‘s first two films were not only critically acclaimed and well-received by the audience, but they were also both extremely successful in terms of earnings, especially the first one. The 2018 movie, which had a $17 million budget, grossed $188 million domestically and $146 million internationally, adding up to a total of $334 million worldwide, which is the franchise’s box office record so far (via The Numbers). Additionally, that is a box office almost 20 times bigger than what the movie cost. Nonetheless, $334 million is still a beatable number for A Quiet Place: Day One.

Beating A Quiet Place‘s incredible record of grossing almost 20 times its production budget seems quite impossible given that it is a remarkable achievement and that the franchise, like most franchises, shows an increasing tendency regarding costs. However, breaking the $334 million record seems a lot more plausible considering the context. First, the constant delays since the film’s announcement in 2020 have turned the movie into one of the most anticipated movie releases of 2024. Secondly, the film will not face any challenging competition during the first two weeks after its June release.

A Quiet Place Could Become A $1 Billion Franchise With Day One’s Release

In addition to breaking the record of the highest-grossing film of John Krasinski’s franchise, A Quiet Place: Day One can also set another very interesting milestone for the saga. Although the first film became an instant hit by generating $334 million worldwide on a $17 million budget, the second movie was also very successful in a not-so-groundbreaking way. A Quiet Place Part II grossed $160 million domestically and $136 million internationally, adding up to a total of $296 million worldwide. Looking at the bigger picture, Day One‘s release could potentially turn A Quiet Place into a $1 billion franchise.

Worldwide Box Office

A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place Part II (2021)

$296,650,356

Total

$348,240,125

$283,286,901

$631,527,026

A Quiet Place’s $334 million and A Quiet Place: Part II‘s $296 million box offices add up to a total of $630 million. Day One needs to make $370 million for A Quiet Place to become a $1 billion franchise. Assuming that the film will be successful, given the level of excitement about it and the franchise’s box office tendency, $370 million seems plausible. For a film to be profitable, it must make at least three times its production budget. Day One is presumably at least a $100 million film, which means it has the potential to make $400 million worldwide.

A Quiet Place: Day One’s Box Office Could Determine The Franchise’s Future

A Quiet Place: Day One giving a good performance at the box office is not only about breaking records but is also crucial for the future of the franchise. In 2020, when Part II premiered, two more films were announced: Day One and a sequel to the first two movies. For the past four years, both installments have been delayed during production. A Quiet Place 3 has been delayed to 2025, but Day One’s performance could have an impact on the fourth movie in the franchise.

A Quiet Place 3’s development has been delayed once more and, despite being disappointing, can be beneficial for John Krasinski’s franchise.

A bad box office performance by A Quiet Place: Day One could mean a couple of negative things. Underwhelming earnings could generate further delays for A Quiet Place Part III, with producers trying to prevent the poor results from affecting the sequel’s 2025 release. On the other hand, a good performance will surely put extra faith in the franchise, meaning the saga could be expanded through more sequels, prequels, or spinoffs. The prequel is already connected to the main story through Hounsou’s character, and similar methods could be explored to highlight more characters and settings while still linking back to the Abbott’s journey.
