A Quiet Place 2 Trailer Breakdown: 12 New Character & Story Reveals

A Quiet Place 2 Trailer Breakdown: 12 New Character & Story Reveals

After a mysterious teaser trailer was released, the full trailer for A Quiet Place 2 dropped on Jan 1, 2020. The highly-anticipated follow-up to John Krasinski’s 2018 film follows the remaining members of the Abbott family as they continue to survive in an apocalyptic land where alien creatures who hunt by sound are a constant, looming threat.

Though 2020 looks to be a banner year for unique, original horror, the story of the Abbott family has been one fans have been eagerly awaiting a return to since the original film. John Krasinski returned as the writer and director for the sequel, even though his character, Lee Abbott, the family’s patriarch, didn’t survive the first film.

The trailer is just as intense as fans could expect from a movie that had everyone holding their breath in theaters. New characters, a flashback, terrifying monsters, and plenty of danger lurks in the new trailer for A Quiet Place 2 – here’s our full breakdown.

12. Day One: Flashback To The Outbreak

A Quiet Place 2 Trailer Breakdown: 12 New Character & Story Reveals

In the very beginning of the trailer, the Abbott family, including matriarch Evelyn (Emily Blunt) and her sons, Marcus (Noah Jupe) and Beau, who died in the first movie, are driving somewhere when they start to see chaos in the streets and panic all around for some unknown reason. Lee (John Krasinski), the family’s father, and Regan (Millicent Simmonds) do not appear in this flashback, which means the family likely had to reconnect somehow after everything transpired. From Evelyn’s reaction to the events – and seeing the alien creatures for the first time – this was the very beginning of the end.

11. One Very Long TakeA Quiet Place 2 Car Scene Flashback

The entire flashback sequence – which could be longer, in actuality – appears to have been filmed in one very long take. During the sequence, the trailer for A Quiet Place 2 shows Evelyn trying her best to avoid people running in the streets and other cars in what appears to be an outbreak of pure chaos due to the likely sudden invasion. Marcus exclaims that he sees his dad, which might imply they were going to pick him up from somewhere. Evelyn considers turning back to get him, but ends up in a predicament before being able to turn the car around. A large bus, which is boasting a massive hole in its driver’s side windshield, is heading for the car at full speed. In a quick maneuver, Evelyn drives the car backwards as fast as she can to avoid collision with the bus, which appears to have no driver. Moments later, while Evelyn tries to escape the bus, one of the large creatures crawls slowly out of the hole in the window.

10. The Monsters

A Quiet Place 2 Monster Trailer

While A Quiet Place did show the creatures, the trailer for A Quiet Place 2 has given a better look at them, in-depth, in the light of day. They are scattered throughout the trailer: first, during the flashback sequence, then as the Abbott family tries to escape the farm, and in other places throughout the trailer. Regan discovered in the first movie that the creatures are susceptible to high-frequency feedback, which she used by amplifying the feedback from her hearing aid. Out in the world, this knowledge won’t be as useful to the Abbotts, as they can’t weaponize that sort of technology on the go. However, them knowing how to fight the creatures in some capacity is surely to their advantage, as in the trailer, it seems they are still plentiful.

9. The Abbott Family

Abbott Family A Quiet Place 2

For the most part, the Abbott family seem to be doing well, all things considered. Evelyn, Marcus, Regan, and the baby are surely still grieving after the loss of their husband and father, respectively. However, in an apocalyptic setting, there’s no time for grief and sorrow, so it seems Evelyn has renewed her vigor – though the teaser trailer showed she is still sporting an injured foot after stepping on a nail in the first movie – and channeling her inner strength and survival skills to lead her family to safety once more.

8. Leaving The Farm

A Quiet Place 2 Trailer

It appears the farmhouse where the family was stationed during the events of the first movie is on fire, and, as proven by the ending of A Quiet Place, unsafe. It’s unclear as to whether the movie will show how they survived their battle with the creatures who were closing in on them at the end of the first movie, but they certainly fought their way out. Therefore, the Abbotts are heading to a new location that seems to be one they’ve been considering as a back-up plan; Lee was very astute about planning, so it’s possible that he had a different route planned for the family if ever they did have to relocate in the future. During A Quiet Place, it was shown that the family went fishing and likely did a bit of exploring in the immediate, surrounding areas to maintain a steady haul of food and supplies.

7. The Movie Timeline

A Quiet Place 2 Teaser Trailer Emily Blunt

Just like in the teaser trailer, the trailer for A Quiet Place 2 shows that the film, primarily, picks up right after the first left off. Evelyn’s foot is still injured, the baby is a newborn, and they are en route to a new location. The first movie had a flash-forward after their youngest son, Beau (Cade Woodward), was killed by the creatures after activating the sound feature on his toy rocket. Since there is a flashback at some point during the movie, it’s possible there will be time jumps in this film as well. Likely, these time jumps would be minimal, as it seems to be focused on the future and the prospect of starting over after the Abbotts’ most recent bout of hardship, but they can’t be counted out completely.

6. Traps In The Train Yard

A Quiet Place 2 Emily Blunt Train Yard Trap

Eventually, the family makes it to a train yard on their journey to find a new home. Upon arrival, Evelyn unwittingly triggers a trip wire, which causes a trap – a string of glass bottles that have all be tied together – to drop and make a loud noise. This, obviously, sends the creatures heading in their direction. Evelyn and her children try to flee the area before being caught and killed, and end up inside a large building within the yard. As they’re running, there’s a flash of the family members being sized up through the sights of a rifle, which implies someone is nearby scouting the area who is armed and prepared.

5. Cillian Murphy

Cillian Murphy In A Quiet Place 2

Once inside the building, Evelyn is grabbed by a man (Cillian Murphy) who urges her to be quiet, but doesn’t seem to present any immediate harm. Cillian Murphy’s character has been confirmed to play a major role in A Quiet Place 2, though details about his character are still largely a mystery. From what the trailer reveals about his character, he seems to be another survivor who has been trying to build a life for himself as best as he can, alone, similarly to how the Abbotts have done. He, however, seems to lack the optimism and sense of togetherness that they do, prescribing to a more bleak, pessimistic outlook and distrust of other people instead.

4. The Baby Problem

A Quiet Place 2 Baby in Box

In some shots, Evelyn carries her newborn baby in a cloth swaddle, but it also travels in a special carrier box that was revealed in the first movie. This is likely for two reasons: one, extra protection and two, to muffle any sounds it makes. In the brief shot of the infant inside the box, it appears to be attached to some kind of oxygen, which might mean it’s ill. Or, alternatively, it’s being administered some kind of calming gas to keep it from crying out. Having a baby in such a sound-sensitive environment is almost a guaranteed recipe for disaster, which ratchets scares up to an intense degree because of how unpredictable infants are. There were measures taken to quiet the baby in A Quiet Place, but out in the world, while the Abbotts are traveling and looking for a new home – or as they’re getting acclimated to one – this might not be immediately possible to remedy.

3. People Out There – Not Worth Saving

A Quiet Place 2 Alien Claw

Cillian Murphy’s character is quoted in the trailer as saying: “You don’t know, do you? I do. The people that are left, they’re not the kind of people worth saving.” This is in response to the family hearing some kind of distress signal that Noah catches over headphones while they’re stationed in a bunker-type area. She insists that there are people out there worth saving, likely referring to how Murphy’s character is seemingly intent on helping them, which could be due to the fact that they have children and a baby among them, but this is unclear. Similarly to themes that have been explored in long-running, post-apocalyptic franchises like The Walking Dead, this concept is surely meant to imply that some people – other survivors – have become just as ruthless and dangerous as the creatures they’re trying to avoid. This could possibly become a key plot feature in A Quiet Place 2.

2. Djimon Hounsou

Man on the Island driving the car in A Quiet Place Part 2

Djimon Hounsou (Black Panther) appeared briefly in the trailer as well. Like Murphy, his character is still a mystery. Given the context of his appearances in the trailer, he may have a smaller role that only appears in flashback sequences that are related to Murphy’s character. Or, if Murphy’s character isn’t meant to be a villain, perhaps Hounsou has become villainous due to needing to make tough decisions in order to survive. This might set up a conflict between him and Murphy’s character, should the two cross paths in present time, if something negative had transpired with them in the past and old grudges haven’t been laid to rest.

1. Cillian Murphy’s Past

Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou A Quiet Place 2

The trailer closes with a few flashbacks of Murphy’s character history atop his ominous warning about the type of people who are still left out there. One particularly haunting sequence involves him, Djimon Hounsou, and two kids during what could be the early stages of the invasion. Hounsou and Murphy shut them in a closet while Murphy holds up his finger to suggest they stay quiet. Given Murphy’s outlook in present time, it’s likely something bad could have happened to his family. It’s also possible that he and Hounsou were friends or neighbors who tried to stick together, but something bad happened to force them apart. There are still a lot of questions left to be answered, but A Quiet Place 2 showed some big reveals with their first trailer release, and there are surely more to come.
