Warning: contains spoilers for chapter 1064 of One PieceOne Piece’s Bartolomew Kuma has been at the center of several mysteries for the past couple of arcs and the final saga of the series is finally hinting at his role in the story. It may very well be the case that Bartolomew Kuma, along with his daughter Jewelry Bonney, holds the key to the World Government’s greatest weapons.
Bartholomew “Tyrant” Kuma was a notorious pirate who became infamous for his apparent ruthlessness and cruelty towards the country he ruled-Sorbet Kingdom. This may turn out to have all been a ruse, a facade concocted by One-Piece’s World Government in order to hide the fact that Kuma was one of the few kings in open rebellion against said government. This may explain his reputation, but one massive question still remains-if Kuma was a part of the Revolutionary Army and had a daughter he loved out in the world, why would he allow the World Government to turn him into a mindless cyborg slave?
Recently in One Piece, it has been confirmed that Jewelry Bonney is in fact the daughter of Bartolomew Kuma, and has been searching for Dr. Vegapunk in order to force him to return her father to normal. This is a key point in establishing Kuma’s reason for becoming a slave to the World Government. In One Piece’s most recent chapter, there seems to be some kind of relationship between Dr. Vegapunk and Monkey D. Dragon, possibly even hinting at Vegapunk working with the Revolutionary Army. Knowing that his daughter Bonney possesses a Devil Fruit which allows her to manipulate the ages of anyone she chooses, Kuma may have worked together with Dr. Vegapunk to erase his mind in order to keep Bonney safe from the clutches of the World Government. Kuma may have gone through everything he did in order to keep Bonney from accidentally creating the World Government’s most ridiculous weapon yet-the Seraphim.
Bonney’s Devil Fruit Can Create an Unstoppable Army
The Seraphim appear to be childlike versions of former pirates employed by the World Government mixed with Lunarian DNA. These modified clones are the result of decades of research done by the scientific group known as MADS. Several key figures in the One Piece world have been a part of MADS at some point, including Caesar Clown, Queen, Vinsmoke Judge, and of course Dr. Vegapunk. One common element that exists in all of these scientists’ work is genetic manipulation and the ability to create super soldiers. Aside from Queen, every other scientist formerly in MADS has used children in order to foster their genetic modification techniques. The World Government’s Seraphim are still currently children, but Bonney’s Devil Fruit may be exactly what they need- a way to age their bioengineered weapons to their prime in order to create an army of nearly unbeatable and obedient soldiers.
Bartholomew Kuma may have been keeping the World Government at bay this entire time thanks to Dr. Vegapunk messing with his mind in order to keep any information he had from being extracted. As One Piece continues to progress, the series will continue to unravel every single mystery promised to readers over the course of the last few decades, and this is only the beginning.
