A One Piece Blackbeard Theory is So Convincing, it Needs to Be Canon

SPOILERS FROM ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER 1072Major revelations have been coming fast and furious in One Piece‘s Egghead Island arc, like how scientific body enhancements and cloning can finally explain why Luffy’s rival, Blackbeard, might be so overpowered. Pirates in the series have found many ways to become stronger by using Devil Fruits and the series’ wacky science. However, long before the work of Dr.Vegapunk and Vinsmoke Judge opened the series up to enhanced beings, Marshall D. Teach’s weird body broke many of the series’ rules.

Blackbeard has often been one of the series’ most mysterious characters. After the Marineford arc, Teach became the only known character in the One Piece world to control two Devil Fruits. Judging by the design of his Jolly Roger, one popular One Piece theory suggests Blackbeard could obtain three Devil Fruits by the series’ end. Flashbacks provide even more mystery around the character in Chapter 966, where a young Shanks and Buggy talk about Teach saying, “They say he’s never slept in his life.” Now, more than one hundred chapters later, readers may have learned how Blackbeard is capable of such feats.

Blackbeard Could Be A Failed Clone Of Rocks D. Xebec

One explanation for Blackbeard’s strange abilities is that he is a scientifically altered clone of Rocks D. Xebec, the former rival of The Pirate King. Chapter 1072 revealed that Vegapunk has managed to successfully clone a member of One Piece’s Legendary Rocks pirates, Buckingham Stussy. While not yet confirmed, Stussy being labeled in the manga as “Mads Clone Experiment, Successful Subject No. 1” opens the door to more characters possibly being clones or even failed clones. Powerful Devil Fruits and world-changing scientific achievements have escaped and been lost throughout the series. A young Marshall D. Teach may have been one of them.

Blackbeard, Weevil, & Bonnie Could Be Clones Of The Rocks Pirates

In one of One Piece‘s silliest jokes, Dr.Vegapunk insisted the replica of Kaido’s Devil Fruit was a failure because of its color, proving that even the series’ most intelligent character can be pretty careless. However, during his time with MADS, many horrific and deadly experiments were conducted with cloning and body modification. The group of scientists worked to create clones of history’s strongest Pirate crew for a mysterious reason. Stussy proved to be a valuable ally to Vegapunk by infiltrating the World Government Intelligence Agency. Still, Blackbeard could very well be another clone lost or deemed a failure who found their way into Whitebeard’s crew at a young age.

Blackbeard’s abilities break many rules of nature. Until One Piece‘s author Eiichiro Oda provides more insight into MADS’ goals and the extent of their experiments, creating a clone of history’s most dangerous pirate who doesn’t need to sleep and can control multiple Devil Fruits seems like something they would do. Blackbeard and his crew have accomplished many feats that have altered the course of the series’ world. If Teach is a clone of One Piece’s mysterious Rocks Pirate’s Captain, he will likely do much worse before the series concludes.
