A New Girl Revival Never Should Happen Because It’d Undo The Show’s Perfect Ending

A New Girl Revival Never Should Happen Because It’d Undo The Show’s Perfect Ending

In the era of revivals in film and TV, New Girl shouldn’t join this trend as it would undo the show’s perfect ending. The 2010s saw a resurgence of sitcoms, and among the most popular ones is New Girl, created by Elizabeth Meriwether. New Girl introduced the audience to Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel), a quirky and optimistic young woman who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three strangers after finding their ad for a roommate online.

It doesn’t take long for Jess to become friends with Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick (Jake Johnson), Coach (Damon Wayans Jr), and Winston (Lamorne Morris), forming a big, chaotic, but fun and supportive family. New Girl aired from 2011 to 2018 for seven seasons, and it got a second life after its arrival on Netflix, quickly making it to the list of most popular TV shows on the platform. Unsurprisingly, speculation about a New Girl revival has been floating around for a while now, but bringing the show back would undo its perfect ending.

Why New Girl Ended After Season 7

New Girl’s final season was short but gave closure to the series after seven years on the air. But why did it end after season 7?

New Girl Gave Proper Closure To Its Characters

Speaking to Screen Rant, Rob Riggle, who played Schmidt’s brother, shared he’s open and ready to return for a New Girl revival if he was asked, becoming the latest cast member to share his willingness to return. At the beginning of New Girl, Jess is adapting to a new life, while Schmidt, Nick, Coach, and Winston have their own struggles in their personal and professional lives. Over the course of seven seasons, Jess and company develop a strong bond and they all find their paths in all areas of their lives, forming their own families while still being one big family together.

New Girl ended with Jess and Nick finally getting married, Schmidt becoming a stay-at-home dad while Cece worked, Aly and Winston becoming parents, and all of them leaving the loft after Winston’s final prank in which he made them believe they were being evicted. The New Girl finale also featured a brief flash forward during the group’s final game of True American, showing all of them together, with their kids, playing the game.

New Girl gave proper closure to all its characters, and Nick and Jess, in particular, were finally ready to move forward with their new life together, and leaving the loft marked the end of an era for all of them and a new beginning. Thanks to its flash forward, New Girl didn’t leave room for a continuation, showing the audience that the characters will continue to be very close for many more years, so a revival wouldn’t be beneficial to the series and its legacy.

A Reunion Episode Would Be Better Than A New Girl Revival

The cast of New Girl is on a poster.

Instead of a revival, New Girl can have a reunion episode. Many other sitcoms opted for reunion episodes and specials rather than a full revival or reboot, as was the case for Friends and Parks & Recreation. These reunions allow the audience to see the cast back together, either as themselves or as their characters, and they can even offer updates on what their characters are currently up to. A reunion episode of New Girl wouldn’t mess with the ending of the series, instead being a fun addition to it and giving fans more insight into the characters and what they would be doing nowadays.

There have been successful and failed TV revivals in recent years, as well as different reunion episodes and specials, but it’s not a must for every popular TV show to be brought back in some way. Nostalgia can be quite profitable, but it doesn’t guarantee success and can end up hurting a show’s legacy.

When Jess decides to leave her boyfriend of seven years after discovering he’s been unfaithful, she finds a craigslist ad and becomes the roommate of three men around her age who desperately need to rent a room in their loft. Occasionally joined by Jess’ best friend, the group builds a quirky, dysfunctional family dynamic as they enjoy life in Los Angeles.
