A League of Their Own Show Is A Reimagining of Original Movie Says Star

Amazon’s A League of Their Own is a reimagining of the original film, says star D’Arcy Carden. Helmed by the late Penny Marshall, the 1992 film A League of Their Own was inspired by the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League and is hailed as one of the greatest sports films of all time. A League of Their Own stars Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’ Donnell, and Tom Hanks as the alcoholic, disgruntled team manager Jimmy Dugan.

Last year, Amazon announced it would adapt A League of Their Own into a one-hour series. Created by Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City), the adaption for the small screen revealed it would evoke the spirit of Marshall’s film while focusing on a new generation of women in baseball. Recently, new developments for A League of Their Own series came to light, including Nick Offerman joining the cast as a character that mirrors Hanks’ in the film, and O’Donnell announcing that she would guest star in the series. Now, the star of the upcoming series offers some clarity on the premise.

Speaking with Collider, Carden, who will star as Greta in A League of Their Own, says the series is a reimagining of the original film. Keeping major details under wraps, Radian confirmed the series is not a remake of the film, features new characters, and will consist of hour-long episodes. Elaborating that A League of Their Own will place a scope on women becoming involved in the iconic sport in the ‘40s, Carden said:

It’s not the same characters, but it’s the same world. It’s women playing baseball in the ‘40s while the men are at war…We’re diving a little deeper into the storylines and expanding it. I’m loving it.

Of course, Carden appears to admire her character, Greta, and said of the role, “She’s a cool chick. She’s a bit more worldly than the other girls…and I strive to be her.” Despite numerous production delays due to the pandemic, A League of Their Own appears to be paving the way for its own success, rather than ride the coattails of the original by using the same characters. Currently in production, A League of Their Own also stars Jacobson, Chanté Adams, Roberta Colindrez, Kelly McCormack, and Priscilla Delgado.

At a glance, it appears Amazon’s A League of Their Own will offer more diversity than the original film. Of course, Marshall’s classic had solidified its place in Hollywood history, and a remake may not have gone over well with devoted fans. However, Graham and Jacobson’s take could reignite the importance of that pivotal time in history for women to a new generation. Stemming from the creative hands of Jacobson, toting a talented cast, and reimagining the beloved classic film, A League of Their Own could be a home run for Amazon.
