9 Upgrades We Want To See In Star Trek’s New Enterprise-G

9 Upgrades We Want To See In Star Trek’s New Enterprise-G

Introduced in Star Trek: Picard season 3, the USS Enterprise-G should receive some much-needed upgrades for Terry Matalas’ as yet unconfirmed Star Trek: Legacy. Pitched as a show that will continue the story of Picard season 3 by focusing on the last generation and the next, Legacy is yet to be commissioned by Paramount. The fan desire to see the show has been noted by Alex Kurtzman, but nothing is confirmed and Star Trek: Legacy is not yet in development.

However, Star Trek: Picard production designer Dave Blass shared thoughts on how the Enterprise would change if Star Trek: Legacy happens. Because Picard seasons 2 and 3 were shot back to back, the USS Enterprise-G was essentially a redressed version of the USS Stargazer from season 2. If Star Trek: Legacy is greenlit and Dave Blass is hired to work on the show, then there will be more work done to differentiate the Enterprise-G bridge set from that of the Stargazer. This means that if Legacy goes to series, fans can expect to see multiple upgrades to the Enterprise as part of the USS Titan-A’s refit at the end of Picard season 3.

9 A Proper Bar (Not A Holodeck Ten Forward)

9 Upgrades We Want To See In Star Trek’s New Enterprise-G

The use of the holodeck Ten Forward in Star Trek: Picard was likely borne out of the back-to-back nature of filming seasons 2 and 3. The Ten Forward set played a pivotal role in the story of Picard season 2, in both the 24th and 21st centuries. With an existing bar set, it made perfect sense to reuse it as a holodeck simulation instead of building a brand-new bar for the USS Titan-A. Should Star Trek: Legacy get commissioned, it should have a starship bar like the USS Enterprise-D’s original Ten Forward, where the crew can unwind together after a busy shift.

8 The Enterprise-G Needs Starfleet Carpets

Starships need carpets because they’re much more forgiving during a crisis. If a console explodes and sends a crew member flying, the harsh metal flooring of the USS Enterprise-G would only exacerbate the injuries. They’re also more comfortable to pass out on when under the influence of a psychic entity or a ship wide blackout. The Titan-A was refitted as the USS Enterprise-G in tribute to Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, it’s only right that this tribute includes the appropriate carpeting.

7 The Enterprise Needs Brighter Lighting

Picard and Riker in conflict on the bridge of the Titan-A

During Star Trek: Picard season 3, the bridge of the Titan was incredibly dark. This may have been a deliberate choice during their evasion of the Shrike, as they operated a silent running-style procedure. However, even when Picard and Captain Riker (Jonathan Frakes) first boarded the ship, the lighting was turned down very low indeed. Star Trek‘s starships are a home for the crew as much as they are military vessels, meaning that the lighting on the USS Enterprise-G should be far more bright and homely than it was on the Titan-A.

6 Cetacean Ops

Picard and Lower Decks Cetacean Ops

Whales play a big role in Star Trek from saving the world in The Voyage Home to aiding the navigation of starships in the 24th century via the Cetacean Ops facility. The Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual revealed that the USS Enterprise-D had a crew of dolphin navigators that were supervised by two whales. Star Trek: Lower Decks finally gave fans a glimpse into this fascinating innovation and the USS Cerritos’ two beluga whales. However, Cetacean Ops has never been realized in live-action, Star Trek: Legacy could change all that.

5 No More Fleet Formation Mode

Star Trek Picard Fleet Formation

Hopefully, Starfleet realized that the Frontier Day disaster was exacerbated by the installation of the Fleet Formation Mode. While Admiral Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) was able to purge the Borg DNA from the transporters, it’s unclear what happened to Fleet Formation. It’s hoped that Starfleet’s big mistake was fixed in the year between Frontier Day and the launch of the USS Enterprise-G. The Federation flagship should be free to make its own movements, rather than becoming automated as part of the wider fleet. When it comes to the removal of Fleet Formation, this particular downgrade would be a huge upgrade.

4 Emergency Command Hologram

Captain Liam Shaw from Star Trek: Picard.

Terry Matalas and Todd Stashwick have teased that Captain Liam Shaw could return from the dead in Star Trek: Legacy. Matalas and Stashwick are keeping the means of Shaw’s resurrection a secret until Legacy is commissioned. One potential way for him to return would be as the USS Enterprise-G’s emergency command hologram. Created by the crew of the USS Voyager, the ECH was deployed when the entire command crew were incapacitated. Presumably this was adopted by other Starfleet ships after Voyager returned to the Alpha Quadrant, so perhaps Shaw’s image has been retained somewhere deep within the Enterprise-G’s systems.

3 Astrometrics Lab

One of the innovations introduced to the USS Voyager by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) was the astrometrics lab she designed with Ensign Harry Kim (Garrett Wang). Using Borg technology, Seven and Harry were able to accurately chart the Delta Quadrant’s interstellar bodies. It’s largely thanks to Seven that Starfleet will now have so much information about the Delta Quadrant. Now that she’s Captain of the Enterprise, Seven may see fit to design her own astrometrics lab from which her crew can chart the new interstellar phenomena that they encounter.

2 Battle Bridge

Picard commands his crew from the battle bridge, while standing by his chair

The battle bridge was introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s pilot episode and was used during the Enterprise’s impressive saucer separation procedure. Theoretically it could also be used to control the ship after catastrophic damage to the main bridge, which is why the two bridges were linked by an emergency turbolift. It’s clear that the USS Titan-A didn’t have a secondary bridge during Star Trek: Picard season 3 as it would have proved easier to wrest control of the ship from Captain Vadic (Amanda Plummer). However, now that it’s been refitted as the Federation flagship, a battle bridge could be a valuable addition to the USS Enterprise-G.

1 Quantum Slipstream Or Proto-drive

USS Protostar flight

Star Trek: Picard began 16 years after the first flight of the experimental starship, the USS Protostar. Harnessing the power of a very young star, the Protostar was able to travel 4,000 light years in a matter of minutes. Although the Protostar was destroyed at the end of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, it was presumably still possible to replicate the technology for future use. Giving the USS Enterprise-G a proto-drive or, failing that, a quantum slipstream drive would allow the ship to go further and faster than its predecessors should Star Trek: Legacy get the green light.
