The ambiguous ending of Amazon’s television adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith leaves a number of possible ways for John and Jane’s characters to return. The celebrated new series feels much more like a remixed version of the original 2005 movie of the same name than a devoted remake. It takes inspiration from the basic premise of the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie film while enhancing certain qualities that offer a more grounded and lifelike version of the concept. Created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows Jane Maya Erskine & John (Glover), two spies who agree to an arranged marriage. By the end of Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 1, John and Jane realize they have been misled by another higher-ranking Mr. & Mrs. Smith couple played by Parker Posey and Wagner Moura. The most plausible way for John and Jane to survive is that Maya Erskine’s Jane was successful in killing Posey’s Jane, who had her and John cornered in the safe room in their own house. Erskine’s Jane only had one bullet left in the chamber but there are three gunshots that can be heard before Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 1 ends. Somehow, Erskine must have used her one bullet to neutralize Posey’s Jane before picking up her weapon and firing the other two shots. Theoretically, Erskine’s Jane then neutralized Moura’s John and got her partner to safety, after which they could decide to defect from the agency and go after Hihi.

One way that Erskine’s Jane and Glover’s John could gain leverage is if they agree to part ways and work with other partners. Hihi clearly did not like their match anymore, so it could be in the best interest of each character to separate and try again with someone new. This could open up a lot of potential for each character as individuals before likely finding ways to bring them back together, such as them discovering that they really do love each other and setting up a “forbidden love” type of dynamic. Hihi could spare them if they agreed to cut off all communications.
2 John & Jane Are Tasked With Killing The Other Person

At the end of Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 1, Erskine’s character is instructed to kill Glover’s John. This was a nod to the original movie, in which both John and Jane were instructed to kill one another. The Amazon series could take this one step further by fully recreating the original Pitt-Jolie scenario in which John is also instructed to kill Jane by Hihi. The two were trying to kill each other at the end of the Amazon series but that was revealed to be due to misunderstandings. John wanted revenge because he thought Jane had rigged his house with explosives, which turned out to be Posey and Moura’s characters.

If both John and Jane do survive, the biggest question will be whether or not they decide to stay with Hihi, a company that clearly had a vested interest in killing them. Glover and Erskine would likely be on the run from other super high-risk agents even if they both completely withdrew from the program. Moura and Posey’s characters laughed at the thought of anyone ever leaving the Mr. & Mrs. Smith agency, which leaves few options for Glover and Erskine’s characters but to stick together. They could even want to give marriage an honest try outside of the arranged setup in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
