8 The Witcher Characters Powerful Enough To Beat Vilgefortz In Season 4

8 The Witcher Characters Powerful Enough To Beat Vilgefortz In Season 4

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels.

The Witcher season 3 revealed its most dangerous character to be the mage, Vilgefortz, but these eight characters from the show and books could be powerful enough to match the evil sorcerer. The Witcher has had an up-and-down existence of late, struggling to appease fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels while often underperforming with casual audiences who are unfamiliar with the source material as well. However, the show has improved its level of loyalty to the books as it has progressed, as seen in some of season 3’s best fighting scenes and dialogues, creating hope for the once-bright future of this massive franchise.

A huge part of that increased loyalty comes in the form of Vilgefortz, who has finally been revealed as the overarching antagonist of the series. In the process of revealing the evil mage’s true nature, The Witcher has also shown how powerful Vilgefortz actually is. In the books, Vilgefortz is absurdly strong with chaos, and he has more knowledge of the ways of magic than perhaps any other living character. Defeating Vilgefortz will prove a massive challenge, but these eight characters from The Witcher season 4have enough power or potential to match up with the mildly insane sorcerer.

8 Geralt

8 The Witcher Characters Powerful Enough To Beat Vilgefortz In Season 4

Geralt may not be a mage, but considering he is the one to actually defeat Vilgefortz in the books, he is the most obvious member of this list. In the books, Geralt receives an amulet that protects him from most magical attacks, allowing him to fight Vilgefortz with his trusty sword without fear of being incinerated by a flick of the mage’s magical wrist. Geralt’s fight with Vilgefortz in The Witcher season 3 was a one-sided affair that left the witcher on the brink of death, but his next chance against the mage is destined to turn out differently.

7 Yennefer

Yennefer using her powers to hold a portal while Ciri looks in The Witcher season 3

Yennefer is one of the most powerful mages alive, and if anyone can match Vilgefortz magic-for-magic, it’s Yennefer. She is repeatedly mentioned as one of the strongest characters in the books, even if The Witcher hasn’t properly conveyed that yet. Yennefer is a lot different in the books, but it seems unlikely that she would be downgraded in terms of magical ability. It wouldn’t make much sense to weaken one of the series’ most powerful characters in a show that is rooted in spectacle, so expect her to compete well if she gets a chance to fight Vilgefortz at some point in The Witcher.

6 Ciri

Ciri using her fire power in The Witcher

Ciri, who will come to be known as the Lady of Time and Space, has the most raw potential power of any character in The Witcher franchise. If she is able to harness the full extent of her ability, nobody will be able to stand in her way, not even Vilgefortz. The problem is that Ciri has nobody to teach her how to use her incredible power. Even the other mages on the continent cannot understand or explain the full extent of her abilities. She is never able to fully harness them in the books, but if she does in the show, Vilgefortz beware.

5 Regis

Vilgefortz defeats Geralt in The Witcher season 3 episode 6

Regis, who is one of the characters The Witcher season 4 should be introducing, is a higher vampire, making him incredibly powerful and nearly immortal. Higher vampires are ridiculously fast and strong, and they are capable of turning invisible. Not to mention, they can turn into giant flying bats. Higher vampires are capable of regenerating their body parts as well, even if they are chopped into pieces and buried underground, as Regis says happened to him in the books. All of this makes Regis capable of putting up a fight against Vilgefortz, although Vilgefortz defeats him easily when they face off in the books.

4 Avallac’h

The Witcher Blood Origin Avallac'h

Avallac’h is an elven mage from The Witcher who makes his Netflix debut in the show’s prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. He also plays a critical role in the iconic video game, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. Avallac’h is extremely powerful, and he should be reappearing soon in The Witcher, making him another character who might have a chance against Vilgefortz. Elven mages are generally extremely powerful, and Avallac’h is one of the strongest of their number. He ends up teaching Ciri something of her power and potential, and his extensive knowledge of the inner workings of magic makes him a candidate to compete with Vilgefortz.

3 Eredin

Eredin in The Witcher Blood Origin

Eredin is another character who appears in The Witcher: Blood Origin, and, as the leader of the Wild Hunt, he is one of the most powerful and dangerous characters in The Witcher‘s world. Eredin, the main antagonist of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, is obsessed with locating and taking control of Ciri, which means he could end up competing with Vilgefortz, who just so happens to have the same obsession. Eredin is incredibly powerful with magic, but his control of the Wild Hunt is what really makes him dangerous. If these two did fight, it would be an epic confrontation, though it would be a The Witcher change from the books.

2 Phillipa

Phillipa in The Witcher season 3.

Phillipa is another extremely powerful mage from The Witcher who could, under the right circumstances, compete with Vilgefortz. She is similar in power to Yennefer, and her knowledge of magic is extensive. In all likelihood, Phillipa would be quickly dispatched in a duel with Vilgefortz, but her cunning would give her a chance. Head-to-head, Phillipa would lose a contest of strength, but she has shown time and time again that she knows how to manipulate a situation in her favor. If she were able to outwit Vilgefortz in some way, she could have a chance of defeating him.

1 Francesca

The Witcher season 2 Francesca Findabair

Francesca Findabair, The Daisy of the Valleys, is another of the most powerful mages in The Witcher. Being one of the elite elven mages on the continent, she is another character who could have a chance against Vilgefortz. When riled, Francesca is a force to be reckoned with, as she proves in The Witcher season 2 when she walks through the streets of Cintra killing every human baby in the vicinity with seemingly little effort. She may not have the raw power that Vilgefortz has, but her determination and ferocity could give her a chance if she ever ends up fighting Vilgefortz.
