8 One Piece Season 2 Scenes That Will Make You Cry

Despite One Piece being notable for its sense of wonder and perpetually fun characters introduced in each arc, the source material is rife with dramatic moments that set up some heartbreaking moments for One Piece season 2. From expansions on characters’ sad backstories to the deaths of beloved characters, the next chapter in the Straw Hat Pirates’ story is bound to have audiences feeling the depths of Eiichiro Oda’s compelling writing. Additionally, the series of unfortunate events that are on the horizon for the Straw Hats may permanently change their central dynamic.

While there are many scenes One Piece season 2 has to get right to remain a faithful adaptation of its source material, the commitment to faithfulness will result in some of the worst things possible happening to the heroes and even some of the villains. One Piece develops its characters well in the arc, which means viewers can expect to see different sides to the characters already introduced. Additionally, further context via flashbacks will also provide unique insights into their motivations. However, a few notable scenes will shift the atmosphere from sunny to sad when One Piece season 2 debuts.

With One Piece season 2 on the way, plenty of characters are set to make their live-action debut. Whether good or bad, they might steal the show.

8 Robin Joining The Straw Hat Pirates

Nico Robin’s emotional journey to becoming a Straw Hat Pirate fleshes out her character.

Nico Robin is an important One Piece character as she serves as the Straw Hat Pirates’ archaeologist. Robin’s older age essentially makes her something of a mother figure to her much younger crew mates, which adds to the crucial role that she plays aboard the Going Merry. However, prior to Robin’s membership, she was a villainous character known as Miss All Sunday, who worked alongside the villainous Baroque Works. After Luffy’s faith in her, she eventually has a change of heart and decides to join the Straw Hat Pirates.

Robin’s cold and callous exterior combined with her formidable skills on the battlefield via her Hana Hana no Mi Devil Fruit, which grants her the ability of multiple arms, makes her one of the most dangerous villains early in the franchise. As such, Crocodile uses her fighting prowess and expansive knowledge of poneglyphs to aid in his reign of terror over the citizens of Arabasta. Nevertheless, after witnessing Luffy sticking his neck out to help free her from Crocodile, she tearfully professes that she wants a second chance at life, which makes for one of the more emotional scenes.

7 Mr. 2 Helping The Straw Hat Pirates

Mr.s 2’s act of selflessness goes against the Baroque Works’ beliefs.

Despite Mr. 2’s battles with the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji in particular, the character demonstrates an impressive degree of character development when he goes out of his way to assist the central crew twice. The first time Mr. 2 assists the Straw Hat Pirates is when Captain Hina ambushes and attempts to capture them while making their passage out of Arabasta, and the second time later down the line when Luffy is poisoned. Each instance speaks volumes of Oda’s ability to fully flesh out and express the nuances of human nature despite his characters’ own sense of morality.

6 Nico Robin’s Past

Robin’s past explains her initial antagonism toward the Straw Hat Pirates.

Even though Nico Robin starts the series off as an antagonist before eventually joining the Straw Hat Pirates, viewers eventually gain an understanding as to why that is via flashbacks to her past. As a child, Robin was bullied by all the other children due to her Devil Fruit ability, which grants her the ability to have multiple arms. Made worse by the fact that her village was burned down since its leaders were teaching people how to read poneglyphs, and it becomes quite clear why Robin develops her spiky exterior.

5 Chopper’s Backstory

Viewers learn that Chopper was bullied by his fellow reindeer in his youth.

Similar to Robin, Tony Tony Chopper’s childhood was filled with bullies harassing him due to him having a blue nose, as well as for his Hito Hito no Mi Devil Fruit, which grants him the ability to turn into a humanoid being. As such, Chopper’s self-esteem took a major blow, which significantly contributed to his initial shyness around others. However, Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates, especially Usopp, endear themselves to Chopper since he has a good heart, and along with Usopp working on his cowardly nature, audiences see Chopper grow into a confident ally.

4 Usopp Teaches Chopper A Lesson

Usopp’s act of bravery is a huge character-developing moment for him and Chopper.

Usopp and Chopper teaming up in battle in a scene from One Piece.

Despite Usopp’s cowardly nature, he proves to be one of the toughest characters in One Piece when he continuously stands up to Mr. 4 despite taking a serious beating. What’s more important about Usopp’s character-changing moment is the profound impact that it has on Chopper, who’s also helping him fight Mr. 4. While the two bond over their shared meek nature, Usopp’s declaration of being strong perfectly demonstrates to the wide-eyed, child-like Chopper what heart and determination are, and, more importantly, why it’s necessary to take a stand even in the worst of times.

3 The Straw Hat Pirates Parting Ways With Nefertari Vivi

The Straw Hat Pirates vow to never forget about Vivi.

Nefertari Vivi ponders her next move in a scene from One Piece.

Nefertari Vivi’s sense of duty to the people of Arabasta starkly contrasts with the callousness that the ruthless Crocodile displays, which strongly suggests she’ll be the perfect leader of the people in the future. As such, it makes sense when she decides to stay behind on Arabasta with Karoo after the Straw Hat Pirates help her liberate the people. While it’s unfortunate, it makes sense considering Vivi would be considered a criminal if she stayed with them – something that a leader can’t risk doing. Even though she’s always welcome to return, it’s still difficult to see Vivi part ways.

2 Luffy And Zoro Rescue Smoker

Despite their checkered past, Luffy commands Zoro to save Smoker from drowning.

Zoro saves Smoker from drowning in One Piece.

Since Smoker’s introduction, he’s made it his personal mission to capture the Straw Hat Pirates – Luffy in particular – and throughout his early appearances, demonstrates the ability to bring the crew down. With his swordsmanship and Moku Moku no Mi Devil Fruit, which grants him the elemental abilities of smoke, Smoker nearly succeeds on multiple occasions. However, as with all Devil Fruit users, Smoker can’t swim, which nearly kills him after a strong current of water threatens to drown him and Luffy. Nevertheless, Luffy order Zoro to save Smoker over his own life, which highlights his pure heart.

The moment also has a profound effect on Smoker as it changes his view of Luffy, which prevents him from capturing them later down the line when he has the perfect opportunity to do so. One of Luffy’s greatest character traits is his perpetual faith in other people, both good and bad. While Smoker is a constant threat to the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy also recognizes that Smoker is simply doing his job at the end of the day. His decision to see Smoker’s life saved over his highlights his character, while also reinforcing his incredible leadership skills.

1 Luffy Losing To Crocodile

One of Luffy’s greatest displays of bravery nearly costs him his life.

Arguably the saddest scene in the Arabasta arc of One Piece is the scene in which Crocodile stabs Luffy through the chest with his hook after the two have been engaged in a particularly intense battle to decide the fate of the city. Even with censorship precautions, the scene is graphic, yet it highlights Oda’s ability to raise the stakes in unexpected ways. Rather than Luffy overwhelm Crocodile with minimal effort, he nearly loses his life. As such, the moment profoundly affects Luffy enough to the point of reconsidering his goals, aspirations, and even leadership.

The moment hits hard because it also demonstrates one of the earliest examples of Luffy being genuinely afraid since embarking on his journey to reach the Grand Line, and Crocodile’s remark about the seas being filled with rookies like Luffy makes things worse. Nevertheless, Luffy’s quick thinking and creativity help him restore the loss of water in his body on account of his battle with Crocodile, which prevents him from dying. While the series is filled with many great moments, One Piece‘s second season will treat viewers to many emotional ones as well.
