8 Biggest Rick and Morty Season 7 Trailer Reveals

8 Biggest Rick and Morty Season 7 Trailer Reveals

The Rick and Morty season 7 trailer has finally arrived, and the promo proves that the series will not be held back by Justin Roiland’s recasting. Voiceover actor Justin Roiland provided the voices of both Rick and Morty’s title characters throughout the show’s first six seasons. During this time, the series became a major cult hit for Adult Swim. While the anarchic animated sitcom’s seventh season was in production, Roiland was accused of domestic battery and inappropriate behavior by numerous women. Adult Swim cut ties with the actor and stated that his characters would be recast in the upcoming outing.

Now, the first trailer forRick and Morty season 7 is finally here, and viewers have got their first chance to hear Rick and Morty’s new voices. Surprisingly, the trailer doesn’t feature any meta-jokes that acknowledge the voice changes. When Solar Opposites, another show that dropped Roiland from a major role, returned for its fourth season, the series immediately made a sly, self-referential joke about the new voice of the actor’s character. However, Rick and Morty’s creators did previously reassure long-time viewers that the show would be using soundalikes to ensure that there was as little change as possible.

8 Rick and Morty’s New Voices Really Are Soundalikes

While the creatives behind Rick and Morty season 7 did insist that the show would replace Roiland with soundalike actors, this did not stop many from speculating about the identity of the new voice actors. Rick and Morty could have recast Rick Sanchez with any number of famous actors thanks to the show’s high profile and large fan base, as proven when the comparatively underrated Hulu series Solar Opposites enlisted Dan Stevens to play Korvo in season 4. However, the rumors online that both characters had been replaced by an instantly recognizable A-list actor (or actors) turned out to be wrong, as the trailer confirms Rick and Morty still sound the same.

7 Rick and Morty Season 7 Reunites Rick with Birdperson

Rick and Morty season 5, episode 8, “Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort,” provided a tragic backstory for Rick’s treasured friendship with Birdperson, but this bittersweet outing also ended with the pair parting ways. Since then, Birdperson has rarely been mentioned after the season 5 finale threw the show’s entire canon into question. Luckily, season 7’s trailer confirms that Birdperson will return, with both Gearhead and Squanchy also in tow. Rick and Morty season 7’s promo already saw Summer claim that Gearhead might be back. However, Summer also sarcastically promised that Morty might finally date Jessica, so Gearhead’s comeback wasn’t confirmed until the trailer arrived.

6 Season 7’s Rick Prime Plot Won’t Be Too Dark

Rick Prime meets Rick in Rick and Morty

The last time that viewers saw Rick Sanchez at the end of Rick and Morty season 6, he was hunched over a control panel maniacally obsessing over hunting down Rick Prime. In the season 7 trailer, he is making sardonic jokes about his fruitless search and seems to be comparatively stable. While it is unlikely that Rick has turned the other cheek, his mania appears to have died down judging by the promo’s tone. The fact that Rick and Morty’s season 7 episode titles promise a comeback from Mr. Poopybutthole gives viewers all the more reason to think this outing might be a little lighter than season 6.

5 Rick and Morty Season 7 Revisits A Classic Episode

Not only does Rick turn himself into a leg in the trailer’s opening moments, “Pickle Rick“-style, but he also returns to Dr. Wong’s office (albeit as a hologram). Both of these moments imply that the series will revisit the story of season 3, episode 3, “Pickle Rick.” While this outing’s title did become a particularly infamous meme among the show’s fan base, the episode itself offered an early glimpse into the darkness under Rick’s smug exterior. Hopefully, Dr. Wong’s return in season 7 will herald more introspection from the show’s antihero.

4 Rick and Morty Season 7 Features A Zombie Episode

Characters might be able to return from the dead in Rick and Morty season 7 judging by the show’s trailer, which features zombies prominently. Shockingly, a zombie episode in season 7 would be the show’s first attempt to parody these horror movie staples. Rick and Morty mocked vampires back in season 2, took aim at the Purge franchise in the same season, and spoofed Stephen King’s back catalog in season 1, but the show has never dedicated an entire episode to the Smith family tangling with the undead before. However, season 6, episode 4, “Night Family,” was a stylized John Carpenter homage that proves this could be a great idea.

3 Rick and Morty Season 7 Finally Brings Morty Back To School

Early seasons of Rick and Morty featured a lot of stories set in Morty’s high school and often focused on his misadventures as a luckless student. However, as Rick and Morty’s later seasons prioritized fleshing out Rick’s story over Morty’s characterization, these plots took a backseat. Luckily, the sight of Mr. Goldenfold and Morty running through a hallway together implies that this early-season staple might make a comeback in season 7. After Rick and Morty season 6 missed this opportunity, this could be a promising development.

2 Rick and Morty Keeps The Show’s Most Complicated Dynamic Alive

Jerry, Beth, and Space Beth are seemingly still on good terms, which is quite surprising after their tense confrontation in season 6, episode 3, “Bethic Twinstinct.” That episode ended with a menage a trois between the characters and season 7’s trailer seems to prove that this was enough to stabilize their previously troubled relationship since the characters aren’t sniping at each other in the promo. That said, only time will tell how well they get on now, and viewers could learn that their seemingly idyllic setup isn’t as peaceful as it seems to be in the trailer.

1 Rick and Morty Season 7 Might Address Roiland’s Recasting After All

Morty holds a strange device in front of a frightened Rick in Rick and Morty season 7

In one scene from Rick and Morty’s season 7 trailer, Rick can’t remember who he is or where he is. This plot could be a meta-gag about his new voice, meaning the series may reference its behind-the-scenes changes after all. While Rick and Morty season 7 hiding Roiland’s replacement sounds like a great idea, this was always going to be a tall order in practice. As such, a joke that sees Rick and Morty’s personalities change, only to then return to “Normal,” could allow the show’s creators to acknowledge the changes while still keeping the tone as light and silly as this Rick and Morty season 7 trailer gag.
