8 Argylle Sequels, Prequels, & Crossovers The Movie Sets Up

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Argylle.

Following the release of Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, there are already several options that the director has in expanding the film into a franchise similar to Kingsman. Vaughn, who is celebrated for his classic films such as Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, has been dedicating his time to developing the Kingsman extended universe, which Argylle is confirmed to be a part of. A post-credits Argylle scene makes it clear that the two films belong in the same story world, setting up many potential sequels, prequels, and crossovers that will combine Kingsman and Argylle under the same creative umbrella.

Despite all the hype surrounding Argylle upon its early February 2024 release, the film has received poor critical reception and has had an underwhelming box office performance during its opening weekend. Even with all the success and acclaim that Vaughn has garnered for his previous works, particularly for his celebrated and highly entertaining Kingsman franchise, the director seems to be disregarding the effect that the poor reviews and box office numbers could have on future Argylle installments. The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 35% among critics, although its audience score does seem promising at 69%.

Argylle has multiple twists and an ending that connects to a recent spy franchise. We break down the film’s biggest surprises, what’s next, and more.

8 The Agent Argylle Twist Sets Up Argylle 2

Argylle 2 should expand on Elly’s origin story

The major twist in Argylle easily sets up possibilities for Argylle 2 and beyond. With protagonist and best-selling novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) turning out to be the real Agent Argylle, there are many unanswered questions that future installments of Vaughn’s expected Argylle franchise could address. In this way, Argylle is effectively an origin story of sorts to the real Agent Argylle’s return to life as an actual spy. Argylle 2 can and should continue this narrative thread by creating another grand mission for Agent Argylle to achieve alongside her partner Aiden (Sam Rockwell).

7 Argylle’s Post-Credits Scene Sets Up An Argylle Prequel

Argylle’s post-credits scene takes place 20 years prior

Argylle’s post-credit scene delivers many hints at what to expect from the confirmed Argylle prequel television series that was announced virtually alongside the film’s release. Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes) appears in the post-credits scene at The Kings Man pub as an apparent younger version of Henry Cavill’s fictional depiction of Agent Argylle. This scene, which takes place 20 years before the events of Argylle, makes it clear that Argylle and Kingsman will crossover and share the same narrative universe. The post-credits scene closes with the title “Book One The Movie Coming Soon”.

6 Argylle Might Help Set Up Kingsman 3

Kingsman: The Blue Blood is confirmed by Vaughn

All the new story and characters in Argylle might contribute to the plot of the highly anticipated Kingsman: The Blue Blood, also known as Kingsman 3. Recent updates indicate that the screenplay for Kingsman: The Blue Blood is still being worked on, meaning that the film is still in the development stage. This could be a result of Vaughn trying to incorporate elements, characters, or background information from Argylle into the new Kingsman movie, which will end the saga of Harry (Colin Firth) and Eggsy (Taron Egerton). Since Harry and Eggsy are expected to reach the end of the line, it could make for a great opportunity to pass the franchise baton over to Argylle.

5 Argylle’s Kingsman Connection Sets Up Future Crossover Movie

Kingsman and Argylle are poised for many crossovers

While Kingsman 3 might hold the best opportunity for an Argylle crossover with characters and timelines set in the present day, Vaughn’s ambitious vision for both franchises could set up even more chances for crossover in both film and television. An interesting way Vaughn could combine both worlds is through one colossal crossover movie which could potentially put Argylle and Kingsman characters at odds with one another. There could also be several crossovers set in different timelines, since the post-credits trailer established a deep Argylle history that extends beyond the original film set in the modern day.

4 The King’s Man 2 Could Influence Argylle Prequel Series

The King’s Man 2 will take place during World War II

With The King’s Man: The Traitor King, or The King’s Man 2, already confirmed by Vaughn as well, its contents could inform the plot, characters, and events of the Argylle prequel series. The King’s Man 2 is expected to jump to the World War II era during the 1940s and take place during the rise of Hitler and Nazi Germany. Based on the events that take place in The Traitor King, the newly announced Argylle prequel series could be influenced by or find overlaps with it. The Argylle prequel series appears to be set in the early 2000s and could take the events of The King’s Man 2 into account in its story.

3 Argylle Sets Up Henry Cavill Spin-Off Movies

Cavill’s action genre strengths were underutilized in Argylle

One of the most disappointing aspects of Argylle is how sparingly Henry Cavill is used throughout the film, considering he is the film’s biggest celebrity name and attraction. Vaughn could encourage Cavill to reprise his role in future Argylle installments or spinoffs, even though he is only a figment of the real Agent Argylle’s imagination. With much of the anticipation around Argylle having to do with Cavill in the first place, and Dua Lipa and John Cena for that matter, giving these characters their own Argylle movie would be a fun concept. Even if he only appeared in an Argylle spinoff, Cavill should continue to be a big part of the Argylle franchise.

2 Argylle Can Make A Franchise Out Of The 4 In-Movie Books

The Argylle original movie is technically Argylle Book 5

Wyatt and Agent Argylle sit in a car together on a mission in Argylle

Based on the post-credits scene at the end of Argylle, it appears that Vaughn is heading in the direction of making Argylle movies based on each of the books that were in the original movie. This would be a creative approach to expanding on the Argylle universe, in which younger versions of Agent Argylle, including Bryce Dallas Howard’s characterization, would be depicted with additional actors. If the Argylle franchise retroactively made each Elly Conway book a movie, there’s the possibility that Bryce Dallas Howard and Same Rockwell’s characters could be recast with younger actors.

1 Argylle Can Set Up Sequel Series With Elly & Aiden’s Children

The PG-13 Argylle could become a spy family affair

Another direction that Vaughn could go in with Argylle is to make a sort of modern-day Spy Kids movie featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and their characters’ children. One of the best aspects of the original Argylle movie is the onscreen chemistry between Howard and Rockwell, which will likely need to be recreated in Argylle 2 for the sake of continuity and audience familiarity. With so many possible directions that Vaughn can take his newly established Argylle franchise, the only thing that might prevent a Kingsman crossover from happening won’t be his ambition, but rather the overall lack of box office revenue to justify his vision.
