In X-Men lore, Laura Kinney has become an integral part of Marvel’s Merry Band of Mutants, with her growth as a character eventually resulting in her taking on the mantle of Wolverine, an iconic role she immediately made her own. More recently going by a new codename, this version of Laura, dubbed Talon has just tragically died in comics, but in a world where mutant resurrection is all but over, who was Talon as a person and hero, and will she ever return?
Sent into The Vault in 2020’s X-Men #5, by Jonathan Hickman and R.B. Silva, to gather information on the post-human beings called the Children of the Vault, Laura Kinney, Synch, and Darwin enter a place where time is artificially accelerated and where days outside equate to years inside.
Surviving together for centuries, Laura sacrifices herself so Synch can upload his mind to Cerebro during their climactic escape in 2021’s X-Men #19, by Hickman and Mahmud Asrar, completing their mission but also effectively killing this “Vault” Laura since she had no back-up like Synch did before she died.

Talon Was The Laura Kinney Who Survived The Vault and Emerged Centuries Older
Talon Was Discovered Alive in X-Men #16 – 2022 (Gerry Duggan and Joshua Cassara)
Soon brought back without the centuries of knowledge Synch was resurrected with, Laura goes about her superhero life as Wolverine, none the wiser. But in 2022’s X-Men #16, while attempting to rescue Darwin, who was captured before Synch escaped, Forge discovers a still-alive Laura Kinney, only hundreds of years older than before, and brings her back to the real world. With two versions of Laura running around, it was only a matter of time before the older X-23 decided she didn’t want her younger self’s Wolverine role, instead opting to call herself Talon.
Returning to the fold much older and wiser with a streak of grey in her hair, Talon continued to fight with the X-Men where needed. But in 2024’s X-Men #30 and X-Men #31, it’s revealed that while fighting the High Evolutionary, Talon was brutally killed, leading Synch to use Jean Grey’s borrowed mutant powers to hold Laura’s consciousness in his head with the hopes of saving her. Unfortunately, Synch was soon forced to let Talon go, resulting in her true death and officially ending the superhero career of the original Laura Kinney in the most heartbreaking way imaginable.

Though Resurrection Protocols aren’t completely gone, the recent heroic death of Hope and the trapping of the rest of The Five who make mutant resurrection possible inside the White Hot Room has ensured bringing mutants back will be much more elusive, making Talon’s return unlikely, especially since Marvel has been clear about wanting to avoid having duplicate X-23s in continuity. Then again, this is the X-Men, where time travel, cloning, and even resurrection are still feasible options, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Laura Kinney‘s Talon is still kicking around the multiverse, waiting for her chance to return.
