My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #2 improved on its great premiere in terms of writing and overall presentation, and because of that, there’s plenty to be excited about with episode #3’s release. Episode #2 continued to show just how much the anime has to offer, and if it keeps things going like that for episode #3 and beyond, the series will continue to be a great one to watch.

My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #2 picked up where the series premiere left off, with Torako being conscripted into the bizarre Deer Club by the even more bizarre Nokotan. Torako tried to make the best of it by turning the Deer Club into a personalized hangout, but when the Deer Club was vandalized, Torako found herself caught in a fight between Nokotan and a would-be assassin.

Episode #2 continued to excellently play into the anime’s great character and visual comedy, and as such, it left a lot to be excited about for episode #3’s release.

What Happened In My Deer Friend Nokotan Episode #2?

Produced by Wit Studio; Directed by Masahito Otani

My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #2, “Deer Meets Darkness Girl,” opened with Torako happily making her way to the Deer Club, something even the narrator was surprised by. Torako explained to the narrator that she was excited because of how she fixed up the clubhouse to be a personal hangout, but when she arrived at the clubhouse, not only was the Deer Club vandalized, but Nokotan claimed it was the work of someone trying to kill her.

The culprit was soon revealed to be Anko Koshi, Torako’s younger sister with an unhealthy obsession for her. Anko tried to kill Nokotan after she fell under the belief that Nokotan was Torako’s lover and was trying to steal Torako away from her, a misconception Nokotan did nothing to clear up. Nevertheless, Nokotan got Anko to agree to a duel so they could settle things fairly. Anko got the right to deport Nokotan to Nara Park if she won and Nokotan got a lifetime supply of senbei if she won.

Nokotan and Anko’s duel was a quiz show where they would answer embarrassing questions about Torako. Eventually, Anko got tired of the duel and tried to kill Nokotan with a rain of kunai, and while Nokotan was suddenly capable of dodging all of them, she died protecting Torako from a stray kunai. Nokotan came back to life after Deer God literally kicked her out of Deer Heaven, though. While the entire incident made Anko abandon her hatred of Nokotan in favor of being friends with her, Torako was left with no idea what was going on.

My Deer Friend Nokotan’s New Character Perfectly Rounds Out The Cast

Anko in episode 2

The main purpose of My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #2 was to introduce Anko to the series, and she was a great addition to the cast. Anko’s over-the-top obsession with Torako and hatred of Nokotan made for a lot of great visual and verbal comedy, and Rui Tanabe’s delivery did wonders to sell the latter from start to finish. Even with her hatred of Nokotan no longer a factor, Anko will surely continue to be a great source of comedy in the anime, and it will be great to watch that play out.

My Deer Friend Nokotan Episode #2 Is An Improvement On All Fronts

Torako parodying Ashita no Joe

My Deer Friend Nokotan was already off to a good start, and episode #2 took that even further. Not only were the animation and visuals still great from start to finish, but the addition of Anko to the cast allowed for even better comedy writing from My Deer Friend Nokotan, as there was now room for more character interactions beyond Nokotan and Torako’s dynamic. The series greatly evolved its comedy with episode #2, and it’s certain to take things even further throughout the summer 2024 anime season.

Better still was how much the show improved on a technical front. After an incredible amount of discourse surrounding the poor quality of My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #1’s translation, My Deer Friend Nokotan saw a massive improvement with its subtitles for episode #2, as not only was the translation far more accurate, but it featured no noticeable grammatical errors or formatting issues, as well.

All of that fixes the biggest problem that was holding back My Deer Friend Nokotan, and thanks to that, it has a far better chance of becoming a big hit for the season.

Be sure to watch My Deer Friend Nokotan episode #3 when it releases on Sunday, July 21.
