Jemaine Clement reveals a surprising update about Time Bandits season 2. Clement is one of the creators of the upcoming series Time Bandits, which he worked on with indie film and Thor extraordinaire Taika Waititi. Time Bandits is an adaptation of the 1981 film of the same name by Monty Python comedian Terry Gilliam. Time Bandits season 1 premieres on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, July 24.

Speaking with Comicbook, Clement spoke about the status of Time Bandits season 2. According to the co-creator, he and Waititi are “actually writing a second season.” That said, Time Bandits season 2 has not been confirmed. The sophomore season’s creation will depend “on if people watch the first season.” Clement made a deliberate effort not to reveal any of the plot content of the second season, so as not to spoil its beats should it indeed come to fruition. We are actually writing a second season, but it depends on if people watch the first season. If no one watches it, we throw it away in a bin. But I cannot tell you because I don’t want to spoil the second season.

Taika Waititi Is Involved In Multiple Projects

With Clement’s recent statement, there is now considerably more riding on Time Bandits season 1. Time Bandits does have a decent chance at success. Based on the work of Gilliam, the series will work with zany and unique source material, operating within a universe that could lend itself to ample television opportunities. It also features a great duo in Waititi and Clement, who both appear in the Time Bandits cast, in addition to co-creating and serving as writers on the series.

Time Bandits is releasing at an incredibly busy time for Waititi, which could come as a strength or a detriment to the TV project. In 2024 alone, Waititi is involved in another television series called Interior Chinatown, which is set for release on November 19. He also served as a producer on two films this year, including We Were Dangerous and The Mountain. In the coming years, he is also slated to be involved in numerous other projects, including Klara and the Sun, a Roald Dahl project, and a Star Wars film.

On the one hand, the fact that Waititi’s career is so far-reaching could benefit Time Bandits. A wider spread of projects means a wider audience who is already familiar with his work, leading to increased interest in Time Bandits. On the other hand, Waititi could be spread too thin as he is trying to devote attention to multiple projects at once. This could lead to the detriment of future seasons of Time Bandits, even if the show is successful. Hopefully, Time Bandits will be successful enough to warrant a second season and Waititi’s full attention towards the TV series.
