Black Clover is a strong example of a beloved anime adaptation of a Shonen Jump property that puzzlingly has halted production after several successful seasons, as it’s yet to release season 5. The series is recognized as the most-watched anime in 2020 by Crunchyroll users in 87 countries and has released an impressive 170 episodes. However, fans are thirsty for more, and with the anime’s hiatus now exceeding three years, people may be understandably impatient about the state of Black Clover season 5’s production.

The story of Black Clover has expanded well beyond Asta and Yuno’s humble commoner upbringing in Hage. As the manga’s adaptation continues, the surrounding kingdoms play an increasingly large role. With several chapters adapted per episode, the anime briskly covers the pacing of Yuki Tabata’s international bestselling manga.

The Manga Continues as Fans Await New Anime Episodes

On top of Yuki Tabata resuming production on Black Clover’s manga in Jump Giga as of December 25, 2023, the anime has gotten enough time to resume its usual pace. Fortunately, viewers have been treated to other anime projects like the exceptionally animated Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, released on Netflix internationally on June 16, 2023, as filler bridging previous arcs. But with the anime yet to fully adapt the Spade Kingdom Raid Arc, the release date for Black Clover season 5 can’t come soon enough.

The initial reason for halting production on further seasons of Black Clover’s anime beyond season 4 was that the series could only adapt until chapter #272, one of the latest releases before season 4’s debut on December 8, 2020. However, as the manga has cruised past chapter #371 after it transitioned to Jump Giga, with another two chapters expected before the Obon holiday in Japan, the anime won’t have pacing issues with the manga, easily adapting up to chapter #331 in season 5. The manga is in its final arc, so it has space to end conclusively before the anime.

It’s a Matter of Time, but Unclear How Long

Fans may be disappointed that Black Clover season 5 has not received official confirmation. Still, its animating studio, Pierrot, has been busy with high-profile projects, including new Naruto and Bleach content. However, with Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, it’s clear that Pierrot has not forgotten the iconic magic fantasy anime, giving it space to plan out the manga’s ending. Finally, with the transition to Jump Giga, Yuki Tabata has gotten the necessary breathing room to ensure the best transition for Black Clover to get a proper ending.

Further complicating plans to announce Black Clover season 5 is Studio Pierrot’s shift to a more quality-over-quantity-focused approach, citing Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’s success and reception. While Pierrot’s shift to a seasonal approach benefits Boruto the most, as Black Clover‘s filler is minimal, it likely means the simple answer behind no confirmation of season 5 is that it has to wait for other projects to finish. Since season 5 is seemingly all but a given, it mostly boils down to waiting, knowing Pierrot will put in the effort to ensure the wait is worth it.

Long-Standing Friends of Asta Shown in a Different Light

Along with devil lore and the Spade Kingdom, one of the most compelling aspects of Black Clover season 5 will be Yuno, who, without spoiling anything, is far more than meets the eye. In addition to the fascinating revelations about his heritage from season 4, Yuno will increase his powers greatly after a key discovery that should happen closer to the end of Black Clover season 5 should it adapt the complete Spade Kingdom Raid Arc. However, the Spade Kingdom’s Dark Triad of Dante, Vanica, and Zenon are the other Spade officials to watch this season.

Black Clover season 4 ended abruptly with the introduction of the tenth story arc of the series, but season 5 is poised to introduce many compelling elements to the anime. This includes the backstory for Liebe, about whom Asta just learned, such as his position as the devil granting Asta his abilities. As Asta befriends him, similarly to what Naruto did with Kurama, the anime will be able to flesh out Liebe’s backstory as a Black Clover star, with plenty of other elements of the universe being explored as well.

Black Clover season 5 would also explore greater lore about the devils, their hierarchical structure, and their contracts with other key players in the arc. Several key high-ranking devils and their contractual partners will also be featured in this adaptation, namely, the Dark Triad and Dark Disciples of the Spade Kingdom. As these rank among the most despicable villains in Black Clover, fans will be eager to see them each featured in key battles across the story arc as the series explores other developments in season 5, including Asta’s newly restored arm granted by Liebe.
