Longlegs has released a new poster poking fun at Despicable Me 4‘s box office performance, referencing how the two movies fared during the horror film’s opening weekend. Directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs has received positive reviews and became a major, terrifying hit at the box office, earning $22.6 million within its opening weekend. Although this is a record for indie horror films that have come out in the last 10 years, Despicable Me 4 still beat it with a domestic performance of $44.7 million.

Now, Neon, the production company behind Longlegs, has produced a new poster making fun of their loss to Despicable Me 4 at the box office during its opening weekend.

In the poster, an angered face against a red background can be seen, while text calls the horror movie “The #1 Movie in America.” Then, an asterisk at the bottom clarifies, “After Despicable Me 4.” While the poster exudes some of the horror of the actual film, it shows how the marketing of the movie is willing to lean in on real-world humor as well.

Why Longlegs’ Box Office Performance Is So Impressive Already

Despite losing domestically to Despicable Me 4, the new independent horror movie has managed to prove itself as a terrifying take on a serial killer investigation. With Longlegs just releasing in theaters over the weekend, the film’s impressive performance already makes it a standout for horror movies this year. It’s possible that, as positive critic reviews continue to permeate, the movie will keep performing well during its theatrical run. However, given its animated competition’s widespread appeal, it won’t be able to beat it in overall numbers.

However, the movie’s quality speaks for itself, as its tense atmosphere is coupled with an interesting premise that doesn’t go in the direction expected. Because of how much the film stands out despite its premise of hunting down a serial killer, the movie has managed to prove itself, upheld thanks to its stellar box office performance. Since it’s earned one of the most impressive independent horror openings in recent years, the film is bound to be remembered as a major part of 2024’s movie catalog.

Longlegs Makes Me Even More Excited For Upcoming Horror Sequel To Movie With 95% RT Score

Longlegs is already my favorite horror movie of 2024, and it has a connection to another upcoming horror sequel that I am incredibly excited for.

The film is also bolstered by memorable performances as Maika Monroe’s Lee Harker tracks down Nicolas Cage’s titular Longlegs, both of whom get standout moments throughout the film. While it wasn’t able to beat Despicable Me 4 at the box office, Longlegs still proved itself a major performer for horror movies this year. Perhaps, as the film continues to play in theaters, it will continue to compete against new releases like Twister or Deadpool & Wolverine, even if it doesn’t make as much as them.
