Jujutsu Kaisen’s 2nd season director, Shota Goshozono, has just confirmed that he plans to return for the highly anticipated Season 3 at Anime Expo 2024. JJK Season 2 ended with a bang. Not only were fans left mourning their favorite characters, but the Shibuya Incident Arc closed out the season with multiple cliffhangers, forcing fans to wait patiently for Season 3 to discover where JJK’s unidentified author, Gege Akutami’s, story leads next.

After the explosive success of Jujutsu Kaisen’s first season, Ryu Nakayama and Sunghoo Park, the season’s directors, unexpectedly announced they were leaving the project to begin their own animation studio. Some anime fans may be confused as to why Nakayama and Park would leave such a prominent series. However, it’s not the only series they’ve left behind. Nakayama also directed Chainsaw Man’s first season, claiming a second spot in the shonen “Dark Trio,” which includes Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Hell’s Paradise.

Following Nakayama and Park’s departure from MAPPA Studios, JJK Season 2 was in need of a director, and Goshozono was up to the challenge. In 2023, Goshozono revealed that he would be taking over JJK Season 2. While fans were disappointed that the 1st Season’s directors were leaving, Goshozono seemed to be the perfect replacement, bringing a solid resume of experience to the table, including series such as Black Clover, Chainsaw Man, and Mob Psycho 100. Now, in 2024, Goshozono has confirmed that he is thrilled to begin working on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, with special plans in mind for one specific character.

At the beginning of July 2024, Anime Expo met once again for the 31st year in a row. While the convention was canceled in 2020 due to the unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19, Anime Expo is back for good and better than ever, with an estimated attendance of over 390K people.

Many exciting announcements were made at Anime Expo in 2024, including more series coming to Crunchyroll, Blue Exorcist returning with a new season, and a new trailer for Solo Leveling being released. However, 2024’s biggest series, Jujutsu Kaisen, also received a huge announcement: the return of Season 2 director, Shota Goshozono, for Season 3. For those hoping to dive deeper into the details of Season 3, more announcements are planned for Jujufest 2024 in August.

Gosso Isn’t Just Excited For Season 3, He Looks Forward to Animating One Key Protagonist

Gosso Promises To Maki Zenin and Her Character Arc Justice

One of the biggest concerns when fans learn that their favorite series has a new director is about their passion for the series. Projects turn out their best when the director is excited about the story and when it means just as much to them as it does to the audience. Shota Goshozono isn’t only thrilled to work on MAPPA’s most popular series, but he is most excited about animating Maki Zenin, one of JJK’s most interesting protagonists.

Gosso mentioned at Anime Expo that he looks forward to animating Maki, which should put JJK fans at ease. It is clear that Gosso doesn’t only care about directing a high-profile project, but about the stories of each individual character. Maki and her Heavenly Restriction make her one of the series’ most underrated, yet most interesting, characters.

As Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen came to a close, fans were left wondering the true fate of their favorite characters. While some anime end their airing on cliffhangers due to a lack of budget, viewer demand, or director, fans of Jujutsu Kaisen can rest assured that Shota Goshozono hasn’t only returned for Season 3 after Season 2’s global success, he’s more excited than ever to bring Gege Akutami’s story and characters to life.
