Warning: Contains spoilers for Life of Wolverine #1!!!

Wolverine has lived a long life, often filled with pain and loss, and chooses to keep the most painful parts to himself. Now, he has allowed Jean Grey to access his darkest memories and see the parts of his past that he keeps locked away. It provides a full picture of Logan’s experiences and takes their relationship beyond mere affection and romance as Jean sees everything.

Life of Wolverine #1 begins with Jean Grey and Charles Xavier working with Wolverine to “send his consciousness back through time” with Jean acting as the anchor keeping him safely in place. It’s no simple task, and requires her to fully understand his thoughts and feelings, along with the pieces of his life he keeps buried and sometimes doesn’t even remember.

Though Jean is one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe, it isn’t just her psychic prowess that makes it possible; Wolverine places an extraordinary amount of trust in her, allowing her to see and remember him.

Wolverine Makes Jean Grey The Keeper Of His Memories In A Stunning Evolution Of Their Love

Life of Wolverine #1 – Written By Jim Zub; Art By Ramón F. Bachs, Java Tartaglia, & Joe Sabino

Since their first meeting, Wolverine and Jean Grey have shared romantic tension. Though Jean has shared most of her life with Scott Summers, that tension with Logan never faded. The two have been involved on and off through the years, with Wolverine even naming his mutant school in Jean’s honor. Their connection is undeniable, and no one is better equipped to take in the full scope of his life than the Phoenix host. She offers pure empathy as they revisit his worst moments, from the death of his wife, Itsu, to his time with Weapon X.

Wolverine lays between Jean Grey and Xavier before Jean begins to look into his memories.

By the time they reach “present day”, Wolverine has no secrets from Jean. She has seen and felt the moments that shaped his life – good and bad – and has the whole picture of the man he is. She acknowledges “every blessing and curse” in a way no one else has been able to. It isn’t simply accessing his memories that elevates their relationship, however. Jean offers to erase the memories from her mind, to let Logan keep those private moments, and he insists that she remember them. He trusted her to understand him and to keep that knowledge safe even when he couldn’t.

Jean Grey Has Been Essential To Wolverine’s Character Evolution At Every Stage

Together, They Embrace X-Men’s New Era

Wolverine is shown alongside the X-Men as Jean Grey sees his past.

Wolverine’s journey has involved great hardship. After so many years of being used and manipulated, he lives in fear of himself and what he is capable of. The X-Men, and the people he met and befriended because of them, have helped him become a different person. He’s formed connections despite the worry that he would ruin them, and Jean has always played a pivotal role in his growth – a fact that will doubtlessly lead them both into mutantkind’s next chapter. Wolverine and Jean Grey share a profound love, and now she’s the guardian of his most difficult memories.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics’ biggest stars.
